I think the Mccarthy stuff isn't smoke--the Giants plan to draft him. However, to get their guy, the Giants will need to trade up one spot. The Cardinals aren't trading down, they will not pass on Harrison Jr. Why will the Chargers prefer doing business with the Giants? The Vikings have two first rounders, but they don't have the 6th pick. The Broncos have a first rounder but they don't have the 6th pick. The Giants have a major advantage in trading up with the Chargers because they have the 6th pick but it will be an expensive trade up and will cost the Giants their second rounder as well. 20 years after the Eli trade, the Giants and Chargers do business again and the Giants draft a QB at 5.
Prediction on how it will play out:
1: Bears take Williams
2: Commanders take Daniels
3: Patriots take Maye
4: Cardinals take Harrison Jr.
5: bombshell: Giants trade their 6th pick (first round) and second round pick to move up one spot and take McCarthy.
I would hate to lose that second rounder, but if the Giants truly believe Mccarthy is a stud, and they seem to think that, the second rounder just doesn't matter enough when a stud QB hangs in the balance.
Losing that second rounder sucks: the Giants need a top WR, they also need more interior help, but they could draft Mccarthy and sit him on the bench for one season and they have the 2025 draft to find a WR and upgrade the interior of the OL.
As the Giants have said over and over again, Jones will start in 2024, and if he can improve on his excellent 2022 season, and he should be able to do that if the Giants upgrade the OL, Jones can be a valuable trade chip. In fact, I would speculate that Jones will be worth a first round draft pick (or maybe a second with the potential for it to become a first rounder) if he can finish the 2024 season with a top 10 QBR, like he did in 2022.
