I think you can fix both this offseason. It’s definitely doable. You just can’t go in the draft to do it. This is how you do it
First we all can probably predict Garappalo will be available va trade or if the 49ers cut him outright. Obviously they will want to trade him away. The problem is Garappalo in 2022 I do believe is in the 27-28 million range with no years after that. So the 49ers need to find a trade partner that thinks Garappalo is a long term answer. Enter the Giants. This is why I believe it is doable
Garappalo by any means is not elite but he is proven. He took the 49ers to a super bowl. With an good line and middle of the road receivers. Garappalo is a full field reader. He understands coverages and protections. He has a good enough arm. He is in the Ryan, Carr, Stafford, conversation. Middle of the league. The Giants can be competitive with Garappalo
Garappalo will probably demand and 2nd round pick for his trade services. Maybe the Giants can get him here for a 2023 2nd round pick instead of this year. To sweeten the deal sprinkle in a 5th this year? Or 6th.
Jones is trade able. He is. Why because he is young, on his rookie deal and a team can pick up his 5th year option on him. Maybe a 3rd round pick. Let’s say in a perfect world this happens. Jones gets traded for a 3rd and the Giants get Garappalo here for a 2023 2nd and a 2022 5th.
The Giants now have 2 first round picks, 2nd, 3 3rd round picks. A 4th, 5th and 6th You extend Garappalo to a 3 year deal extending his bonus over those 3 years. He could have a cap hit of right around where Jones is now. Maybe a little more. Shepherd gets cut. Bradberry gets cut. Now we are at around 20 million in space with Garappalo at QB.
Now you can take one of those 1st round picks and add Tackle Neal and Lloyd. Round 2 add Zion Johnson at guard and still find a guy like Patterson or Lindstrom at center. You still have 2 3rd round picks here to add a guy like Pickens WR Georgia and an quality TE like Furgeson or Kolar and a handful of others. Rudolph could be a cap cut as well freeing up enough space to add a quality veteran guard as well. Wala You just reboot the Oline. 4 new blockers abs a proven veteran QB. You added a franchise changing playmaker on defense. A quality starting TE and outside WR to go with Golladay on the outside allowing Toney to work the slot. Keep Ross around in case Toney missed half his games next year.
We still own a 4th, 5th and 6th round pick. Maybe another TE. DT and help at saftey? Or a RB to challenge Brooks and Barkley? All of this is done with only 1 free agent signing (Guard) other then the trade.
In 2023 they will be short of a 2nd round pick but they will be in a much better cap situation. And they still have Martinez to pair with Lloyd.
How about that !!!
Trading Jones will free up 8 million
Cutting Bradberry is 11 million
Shepherd is around 5
Rudolph is around 5 million
Right there is 30 million in space.
If you give Garappalo a 3 year contract around 25 million a year that’s 75 million right. 20 million bonus over 3 years. His cap hit will be around 20 million. Giants still have around 10-15 million in space.
