Would you ever stop rooting for the Giants and find another team?
Mike Francesca said something interesting a few weeks back. In criticizing Mara's incompetence, he said that the Giants lost some of their fan base with the PSL fiasco. I wonder if that is really true? I didn't like the PSL situation, but I didn't take a strong position, since I don't attend many games in person.
Watching the Giants play against the Bears today made me think about this issue and if I would ever stop rooting for the Giants and find another team. My complaints: (1) I love the white and blue jerseys, grew up watching the 1980s Giants, but I hate the red, white, and blue jerseys--they are so ugly, I feel like I'm watching a bunch of American flags running around the football field. For purposes of full disclosure, I don't stand up for the national anthem, and so I don't appreciate the colors at all. (2) I'm sick of the losing. (3) The stadium is ugly. (4) I'm still upset over the firing of Coughlin. I thought he earned the right to leave on his own terms. At the time, I was an outspoken critic of the decision to fire Coughlin but keep Reese.
I'm not over the edge yet, and I'm not sure what would bring me there. If they traded their two first round picks for Jimmy Garappolo I would be ready to move on, but this will never happen.
My question for others is: could things ever get so bad that you decide to stop rooting for the Giants and find another team? If you made this move, what team would you adopt as your favorite one and why? I was thinking about the Raiders, I have always liked them, but they are loaded with dysfunctions too (although, at least they have cool uniforms). Maybe the Bills? The Bills are kind of cool, they have such a loyal fan base and I would like to see them win a Super Bowl.
I'm trying to think of some precedent for this. When teams move, they lose a portion of the fan base. I'm thinking of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who lost a large part of their east coast fan base (who, in turn, adopted the Mets). Would it take something drastic like that--a move across country--for you to stop following the Giants and adopt another team?
