Just what we need..... ANOTHER fans thoughts about the #2 pick in ANOTHER draft thread.... Sorry, but please read, I hope this makes sense.
Some fans choose the player they want to see play for the next 16 games. Other fans choose the player they want to see play for the next 160+ games.
Not too many fans look at it from the real POV of an NFL General Manager that wants to do both and understands the business of Football.
Did it dawn on anybody that?:
-A starting QB (drafted high in the first round) playing on a rookie contract FOR FIVE YEARS costs the team only $7,000,000/yr (Goff, Wentz, Trubinsky)
-Veteran QB's or FA market QB's cost about $25,000,000/yr (Eli, Cousins, Garappolo, Carr, Stafford)
Think about what you can do with $18,000,000 of cap space for 5 years? (really 4 years, It would take a solid year for the pick to become a starter and free up some ELI cash)
This freedom allows us to build a winning team around that QB
For the Barkley folks - We can draft a top tier QB prospect AND sign a proven player like LeVeon Bell AND have another $4Mil to sign another starter
- Who would you rather have just Barkley OR Darnold/Rosen + Bonus LeVeon Bell and another starting player?
For the Nelson folks - We can draft a top tier QB prospect AND sign an all pro guy like Andrew Norwell AND have another $5Mil to sign another starter
- Who would you rather have just Nelson OR Darnold/Rosen + Andrew Norwell + another starting player??
*These players are just examples, we'd be looking at the 2019 and 2020 equivilants
This doesn't even take into account that a guy like Barkley will cost us $3Mil more than our current starting RB......
- Take Darnold/Rosen + sign/keep 3 starting FA players OR Take Barkley + cut a player?
Aren't these no brainer decisions?
If this Moneyball POV dosn't convince everybody that we need to pick a QB at #2 or trade down than I don't know what will......
To the Barkley (and other) fans, I really admire you passion! That's the true Giant spirit! give it everything we got and try to win the SB next year, hard to argue with that........
I'm sure a handful more pro Barkley threads will continue to pop up in the next 2 weeks....We can admire their win right now passion.
