There is no doubt in my mind that they went with a scheme fit approach. I think it is important for fans to understand that a GM saying they are going with BPA is a PR trite comment. I strongly suspect that all of the better teams go with a scheme fit approach. The reason I suspect this is that a scheme fit approach integrates all aspects of managing the football operations of a team. It forces clear communications among the Owners, GM, HC, DC and OC in terms of what the strategies will be deployed for offensive and defensive success. Once the strategies are set, the tactics have to be identified to provide strategic success. The tactics put a spot light on positional value within a particular strategy/scheme. In turn the focus of positional value focuses the conversation of what strengths are required at each position. Beyond the conversation about strengths, the use of a scheme fit approach ensures that CAP expenditures are properly allocated; draft boards are properly arranged; the objectives for positional coaching are clear to the coaches and in turn are clear to the players. Perhaps the most important aspect of a scheme fit approach is that it lays the foundation for the objectives for each positional unit and how each player fits into achieving those objectives.
I am thinking that such an approach places a very high level of importance on effective communications throughout the organization. I also think that it inherently places an emphasis on the fact that for a team to be successful requires collaboration by everyone involved. One of the primary tasks for the GM, Asst GM and HC is to ensure that any internal strife/personality conflicts are effectively addressed quickly. There will always be strife of one sort or another virtually on a daily basis. That is what in my opinion is the hardest part of being a leader of any type of organization.
