SALARY CAP EVALUATION
Latest Salary Cap Info: OverTheCap | Spotrac | NFLPA
3/21 Update: Per Game Roster Bonus Explained
I made a mistake in thinking that the per game roster bonus is treated as an unlikely to achieve bonus. It is an unique bonus from a CAP point of view in that it is not counted towards the CAP until it is earned during the season. The contracts for both Martinez (1mm) and Shepard (750k) have per game roster bonuses. The amounts in parenthesis represents the max that can be earned. Thus the per game bonus is divided by 17 to get the weekly amount earned which is immediately charged against the team's CAP.
This type of bonus does a number of things from a negotiations/CAP management point of view.
1. It delays the CAP hit until after the season begins. Thus freeing up CAP space for free agency and the draft reserve.
2. It is an effective way to address a situation in which a player has a history of missing games during the season.
3. It enables a player to earn a significant amount of money should he be on the active roster for most or all of the entire season.
4. The team must take into account the total of all per game bonuses into account when planning for in season CAP space.
3/17 Update on Shepard pay cut
Shepard ended up agreeing to a salary cut to 2.5mm from 8.4mm which represents a 5.9mm savings. There is a 750k per game incentive. I have not seen a description of the incentive details. However, I am confident that the incentives are being treated as unlikely to achieve which would mean that those incentives would be charged to the 2023 CAP not to the 2022 CAP. I have not seen info on what Martinez agreed to. I am thinking it is the same terms as Shepard since Martinez also had an 8.4mm 2022 salary. Thus, the negotiations with Shepard and Martinez very likely resulted in a total 2022 CAP savings of 11.8mm. To a great extent, this explains how the Giants were able to get under the CAP by March 16th with room to participate in free agency. Signings included TE Seal-Jones, QB Tyrod Taylor along with offensive linemen Glowinski and Feliciano.
It is interesting to note that the negotiations with Shepard and Martinez along with the release of Logan Ryan, the Giants likely reduced their 2022 CAP by about 15.5mm.
3/13 Update Shepard and Martinez take pay cuts
Both Spotrac and Overthecap are reporting the Giants to be about 3.7-3.8mm over the CAP. This does not include the pay cuts taken by Shepard and Martinez. According to reports, the Giants will save at least a total of 6mm in CAP space which will put them under the CAP by about 2.4mm. Both Shepard and Martinez are reported as having incentives to earn about 3mm each. Incentives are treated in two ways. Likely to be achieved and unlikely to be achieved. If the incentives are being treated by the league office as unlikely to be achieved, then the Giants may actually be as much as 8.4mm under the CAP (2.4+6). Most likely it is somewhere between 2.4 and 8.4mm. The next step is to get to about 15mm under to cover the draft reserve. This will be easily accomplished by some combination of the following:
1. Cut, trade or extend Bradbury. A trade or an extension would generate as much as 10mm in 2022 CAP savings.
2. Restructure Golladay's contract by converting 10mm of his 13mm salary into a a pro rated bonus that is spread out over the 4 remaining years on his contract. This would save about 9.5mm in 2022 CAP space. The reason I am using 10mm is that is the amount of salary he is guaranteed in 2022. He is not guaranteed any additional salary after 2022. That could make him a CAP cut in 2024. There is too much dead money in 2023 for him to be a CAP cut.
3. Cut, trade, extend or restructure Logan Ryan. A simple restructure does not require the players consent and would save 4mm in 2022 CAP space. This is the path that I expect the Giants to use.
I am currently thinking that the Giants will end up 25-28mm under the 2022 adjusted CAP of 206.6mm. Each team has an adjusted CAP which includes unused CAP space from the previous year. The adjusted CAP is the maximum CAP space that the team can use in the current year. Each team's adjusted CAP space is reconciled with the league office on a daily basis once the new off season officially starts in March of each year.
3/3 Update Shepard asked to take paycut
I am issuing this update because it is a type of negotiation that I did not cover in my CAP evaluation. Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that the team has asked Shepard to take that cut. The new salary would reportedly be close to the league minimum of $1.035 million and the Giants could wipe out the final year of the deal to enable Shepard an earlier bite at free agency.
It will be interesting to see how this negotiation goes. Shepard's 2022 base salary is 8.4mm. I will be very surprised if he agrees to a 7mm cut in pay. I am thinking that in addition to voiding the last year of his contract, a signing bonus will be involved essentially making it a one year contract. Shepard's decision comes down to how much is it worth to become a free agent at the end of the 2022 season vs becoming a free agent immediately.
For the Giants it comes down to how much is it worth to keep Shepard. If they cut him they would save 8.4mm in real money and approximately 4mm in CAP space. The reason that the CAP space savings is lower is due to 4mm in unamortized signing bonus would be advanced from 2023 into 2022. In my mind it comes down to what Shepard and his agent think he can get by becoming a free agent this year. I can not imagine that they would agree to a 7mm pay cut.
Pre-Free Agency Salary Cap Evaluation
Saying that Schoen has inherited a mess is a huge understatement. What makes the challenges he faces so difficult is the current state of the Giants 2022 CAP. According to overthecap.com the Giants are currently 12mm over the CAP. Therefore, Schoen has to trim 12mm by March 16th. In addition, he will need to create CAP space for the draft which I estimate will be at least 12mm if he keeps the team's current top 3 picks (picks 5,6 and 36). There are two main concepts that will drive the decisions that Schoen makes. The first is who to keep and who to cut or trade. The second is who to extend and where should void years be added. I strongly suspect that the addition of void years will be the primary method that will get the Giants out of CAP hell in 2022 without overly burdening future years.
Schoen has said that he wants to clear 40mm this spring. The primary way that he will be able to achieve such a goal is to obtain cooperation from Bradberry and Williams in agreeing to an extension with void years. According to one article I read (https://giantswire.usatoday.com/2022/02/16/new-york-giants-will-need-more-than-simple-restructures-clear-cap-space/), a simple restructuring of a player's contract that does not require a player's cooperation would only yield 18.7mm. As I have indicated above, Schoen has to clear a minimum of 24mm. His goal of 40mm not only includes removing the deficit (12mm) created by Gettleman; but also includes meeting the draft reserve requirement (est. 12mm); as well as having space for free agency (est. 10mm) and having sufficient space to make changes during the season (est 6mm).
Lets first take a step back and look at the top of the front office that has been created. In addition to Schoen the Giants have Brandon Brown and Kevin Abrams heading up the front office. I strongly suspect that Abrams will direct the activities required to meet Schoen's 40mm CAP space objective while Schoen focuses on personnel decisions including current players, the draft and the scouting department. I am thinking that Brown is Schoen's right hand man who will be responsible to make sure that whatever goals Schoen sets are progressing well on a day in day out basis.
I am speculating that what has already taken place is an evaluation of the current team. It would surprise me if decisions have not already been made as to who to keep and who to cut or trade. The Giants have 22 unrestricted free agents. I strongly suspect that virtually all of them will be given the opportunity to see what the market will bare. The reason that I feel this way is that with the exception of Peppers and possibly Carter, I do not see anyone that jumps up and says to me that the Giants need to resign him. With that said, I do see a number of players that are candidates for being signed on a CAP friendly contract.

GIANTS 2022 FREE AGENT TRACKER
Decisions will have to be made on which if any restricted free agents and exclusive rights free agents should be tendered:
I will be issuing periodic updates as Schoen makes decisions that dig the Giants out of the CAP hell that Gettleman left. Here are some thoughts on how he may achieve his goal of clearing 40mm in CAP space:
1. James Bradberry represents a very good first step. His CAP number for 2022 is 21.8mm. Cutting or trading him would only net the Giants about 2.4mm in 2022 CAP space. By extending him an additional 3 years, I estimate that the Giants could clear 10-12mm in 2022 CAP space. I have to believe that Abrams is already working with Bradberry's agent to make this happen. A trade would result in a 13.1mm CAP savings. I am thinking that a trade is very unlikely. Therefore, I do not see how the 40mm goal can be achieved without extending Bradberry.
2. Trading Leonard Williams could save 19mm but I do not see that happening. Williams becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season. He will be 28 this year. So executing a 3 year extension could save as much as 15mm in 2022 CAP space. There are a number of challenges that would have to be dealt with to make this extension happen. Based on what we have seen in the past, I am skeptical about how much cooperation will be obtained from Williams in obtaining an extension that would not heavily impact the CAP during the 3 year extension (2004-2006). Trading him in 2022 offers no CAP savings since his 19mm salary is guaranteed.
3. Kenny Golladay is signed through 2024 and 2025 is a void year which gives the Giants the ability to covert 12mm of his 13mm salary into a roster bonus and average the 12mm over the 4 years remaining on his contract. That would save 8mm in 2022 CAP space while not requiring any cooperation from Golladay and would not be significant additional burden to 2023-2025 CAPs. With Golladay's cooperation, I can imagine some CAP savings being derived in 2023 through some sort of extension this year or next.
4. If Schoen is satisfied with Adoree Jackson's 2021 performance, it could make sense to extend him and covert his 9mm of his 2022 10mm salary into a roster bonus which would save 6mm in 2022 CAP. Adoree is signed through 2023. Without an extension 4.5mm in 2022 CAP can be saved by simply converting 9mm of his salary into a roster bonus and spreading out through 2022 and 2023.
5. Cutting Rudolph and Martinez would save 6mm in CAP space (3mm each). Shepard is in a similar situation as Jackson where converting 2022 salary into a roster bonus and averaging it over the two years remaining on his contract would save 4.2mm in 2022 CAP.
In summary, without Williams cooperation, over 30mm can be saved. With Williams cooperation over 40mm can be saved which would make Schoen's goal of clearing 40mm in 2022 CAP space a reality. The difference between the 18.7mm in the above article I reference and the 30mm I am showing is they did not include Bradberry's extension since it would require Bradberry's cooperation. While I remain skeptical about getting Williams to cooperate, I think there is a reasonable chance that Bradberry will cooperate. If Bradberry and Williams do not cooperate then clearing more than 18.7mm in 2022 CAP space will require significant hits to at least the 2023 CAP health.
