If your OL gels and Barkley is the real deal then your O could flourish. That said, it is so hard to get to the top 2 of the draft without mortgaging your future and you were right there. Personally i dont think any RB is worth #2, but perhaps Gettleman hated the QBs that much...
Giants fans would have been jumping for joy if a division rival like the Eagles took a RB like Barkley at 2 without a clear long term plan at QB. Imagine if the Eagles took Barkley instead of Wentz--Giants fans would be saying how stupid the Eagles are for taking the RB instead of the franchise QB.
Let's say the Jets had the the second pick, and the Giants had the third. Let's say the Jets took Barkley at 2. Giants fans wouldn't stop laughing at the Jets organization for passing on Darnold and taking Barkley.
Some Giants fans are claiming that Darnold is going to be a bust, but of course they are going to say that rather than face the reality of what Darnold can be. There is no doubt, at this point, that Darnold is one of the best QB prospects in the game, just like Barkley is one of the best RB prospects in the game. Both players carry risk and bust potential, but a QB is worth the risk, the RB is not.
I'm very high on Darnold; I'm not as sold on Barkley, who has high bust potential IMO. If I had to make a prediction (while admitting that predictions are often wrong) I would say that in ten years Gettleman will have solidified his legacy as one of the biggest buffoons in New York sports history by passing on a franchise QB for a hyped RB and delivering that franchise QB, and likely championship, to the NY Jets.
I hope I'm wrong, and I'll be rooting for Barkley, but when I put my analyst hat on, I don't see this ending well for Gettleman or the Giants.
i was happily surprised that the Giants were not able to get a kings ransom for trading back - that is what i was most afraid of going into this draft.
It sounds like Gettleman had some fair offers. It was also reported that he instructed his people to not take any phone calls while the Giants were on the clock. Clearly, Gettleman had a fetish for Barkley and wasn't going to move off that position..
It is quite possible that the Giants could have traded down, maybe even to the 7th spot, and selected Barkley there. But we will never know, just like Gettleman doesn't know what offers were on the table while the Giants were on the clock.
