Maybe other people have called Apple a bust, I haven't. I will say this, he hasn't flashed in a game to me yet. It's not the PIs that concern me. It's the fact that receivers are making catches against him and I've yet to see Apple make a play on the ball. Shutdown corners become that in part because they instill fear into the opposing QB. QB is thinking, his coverage is so tight I might get picked if I throw that way. Take a poll of NFL QBs and see if they have any fear of Apple at this point.
Look, the OP is basically this, Conklin or Apple, who'd you rather? I'd rather Conklin. He was get-able and the Giants didn't get him. Conklin would be making a difference this year on the OL, whereas I've yet to see a difference that Apple is making versus any other free agent CB the Giants could have bought and thrown out there.
I'm willing to give Apple another two years to develop fully before making any definitive statements on him. That still doesn't change my mind that the pick should have been Conklin, and if not Conklin, then Tunsil.
But it was not Conklin or Apple as the choices. Conklin was already taken. Yes...someone traded up over the Giants to take him and theoretically the Giants could have traded up a few spots to secure him...but it actually would have been a fairly surprising move to move up like that to grab a RT. Even if OL was a need, how often have you seen teams pick a RT that high in the draft (unless the guy fails at LT first), let alone trade assets away to move up for one?
The Apple vs. Tunsil argument is a completely valid one as both were available when the Giants were picking. But I would guarantee Tunsil was taken off the draft board by ownership...not Reese. Same thing as many other NFL teams who didn't want to deal with the potential headaches without answers/details.
Can trades happen or can they not happen on draft day? It's a simple yes or no question, but we've covered this area already haven't we.
If the answer is yes, (big hint, it is) then Conklin was in play on draft day. Just like Landon Collins was in play on draft day. (And how Conklin was drafted because the Titan's brass were smarter than the Giant's) Drafts are very fluid, one should be prepared for anything in the first round and JR wasn't.
How about another question. What's better, being proactive or being re-active? (Big hint, the answer starts with a 'p') And JR wasn't that on draft day.
Your trying very hard to find an out on this issue. It would be wiser to just admit Eli made a decent post for once. Even a blind dog....
Truth be told, I'm only taking up Eli's banner on this because I was pissed back then that the Giants didn't find a way to get Conklin. (I saw part of the answer to the Giants OL woes get passed up. A smarter team made it happen.) Passing on Tunsil was just piling on.
Apple seems to be in position more often than not. He just can’t seem to get his head turned around and make a play on the ball rather than the receiver. If you turn around and try to make a play on the ball, the refs will let you get away with a little more contact. If you are just facing the receiver and pulling arms, you’re getting the PI call. I think he can fix these issues and become a very solid CB for us. However, I still wanted Tunsil and still to this day would swap players.
Fpr everyone complaining about Apple, how long did it take for Corey Webster to become one of the Giants best corners for a few years after he was drafted??? Apple has 2 very good corners to learn from in Jackrabbit and DRC. Give him some time, because becoming a good cornerback is not the easiest thing to do. Lets look at it this way as well, he's better then Prince Amukamara has been in his first 2 seasons.
"Daniel Jones looks like the actor they'd cast to play Eli Manning in a movie about Peyton Manning's life."

rodney27: You're right about the fumbling problem, tl65taog. I just don't think it can be fixed. He had in preseason, has it at a record pace now, and had the same problem at Duke. If he hasn't fixed it in all that time...I just don't know if he can.
