Wow, I never realized how much better Daniel Jones is than Fran Tarkenton 🙂
The perpetual losing over the past decade(aside from the 11-5 2016 season) has definitely been rough. Our patience has run thin. This season is the first in such a long time that has breathed some life into the organization and provided a bit of optimism for us fans, especially early on this season. As the injuries mounted and the schedule has become more challenging, much of that frustration has crept back in. I for one remain optimistic that Schoen and Daboll can and will turn things around given more time.
While I did not like or agree with the drafting of D Jones, I embraced him as our QB and have supported him throughout his time as QB. Watching him struggle holding on to the ball and progressing through his reads has been beyond frustrating. I, like many of you, realize DJ has not improved to the level we hoped and expect. However, this year, he has shown significant improvement. He has limited the turnovers, been more aggressive with his scrambling, and has thrown a better ball. Anyone who says that he has not improved this season is not being honest and objective. Yes, the coaching staff has game planned utilizing his strengths(primarily his running ability) while limiting the vertical passing game. But one cannot deny that the lack of pass protection and quality WRs has significantly impacted DJs success. We all know he is not a Mahomes, Allen, or Rodgers. The reality is there are only a handful of elite QB in this league right now and the rest fall to the level of DJ or worse. Jones gives this team the best chance to win on this years roster, period.
This team is woefully lacking talent and depth at multiple positions that needs to be addressed. Like it or not, the improvement we have seen this year has led to our draft position drop to a level where we would most likely miss out on the top tier QB talent in next year's draft. Sure, trading up is a possibility but that would require giving up too much. So many teams that have gone down that road to not have it work out.
I believe Schoen and Daboll has shown me enough to trust they can and will continue to turn this organization around. This endless discussion and, for some, obsession with DJ's less than elite play and replacement is a waste of time. The whole team needs to be improved and stay healthy! I will continue to root for DJ's success and improvement. Whether he leads this team at QB next year or not we have not idea. Let's hope whoever it is, management will continue to work on giving our QB the pieces and tools needed for sustained success.
