Sometimes a better way to look at things is what if the shoe was on the other foot.?
After all this time watching Danny closely does anyone here in their heart of hearts have a legitimate fear that he will instantly become better in Carolina.?
Even management, the one's stuck in the dilemma don't fear that. They would prefer transition I am 100% sure but there is ZERO fear of Danny blossoming into a terror.
So that makes contract talks easier and in fact all of of the musings about Danny a bit staid. I mean the prize is not worth fighting for. Is the prize worth giving it one last try? Sure.. we have waited this long...But when traits from the days of Duke -and thank god he went there right?.. imagine if this was the Princeton QB we were talking about- but when Danny still makes processing mistakes and doesn't see the whole field and holds the ball too long etc. Turnovers are down but so is production.
We need desperately gun slinger Danny back. And Coach Dabbol has to give him chance.
I'm sure it surprises you all to know I have been a supporter of Jones all along the way along to this point. But with a new HC and a new GM I am ready to sweep Gettelman's traps and tribulations away!!! Anything that guy placed here is bye bye... That's my view. I want to start fresh. and I want to buy into the new coach fully and his offensive mindset. I don't want Daboll dumbing down his concepts to fit Danny's weak mind.
I think a lot of this is in his mind. But This new coach needs to be able to do what he does and that requires a stud at QB.
To put a spin on this. Whoever really wants to debate this. Let’s ask ourselves a few questions
What is the most important position in all pro sports ?
Quarterback
Now. If Danny was an above average quarterback. He would have been extended already. There would not of been a need to decline his 5th year option and evaluate him. This is by miles the most difficult position to evaluate, draft and develop. If there is a guy in the building that is above average. He isn’t going anywhere!!
Mahomes
Herbert
Hurts
Burrow
Allen
Those are your elite QBs.
Next in line
Rodgers
Wilson
Jackson
Smith
Carr
Tua
Brady
Prescott
Those guys don’t walk. They stay and get paid. Some of the guys are not even playing well. But they have enough good football on tape they still will get paid. You can even argue Tanahill and Goff on this list. Stafford is hurt so I didn’t include him. But he is in that second list.
Jones is with the rest. The Mariota, Darnold, Mayfield, Wilson , White, Lawrence, fields, etc. these QBs have all been given chances too. Are inconsistent regardless of coke, who goes and who gets hurt.
There has to be good football to put on tape to go off off. So let’s talk Danny. When does he play his best football. Seriously. When
1. Run game has to be effective
2. With a lead
3. Play action passes in between the numbers
4. On script plays
5. As a runner
I don’t feel any of those are argument based. I think most of us can agree with that. Now. Let’s play GM. You are the GM. You were hired to turn a franchise around. A few GMs and coaches have been fired before you. They owner says no pressure. But you know you need to win and win right away. Danny is your quarterback. Here is your list to toss around
He has 3 different head coaches in 4 years. 3 different OCs and on your 2nd GMs
Banged up roster every year
Usually had protection problems
Very little consistency around him with playmakers
But you also have to look at
Can he overcome adversity and win
Elevate those around him
Lead
Put the team on his arm
Battle tested with results
Durable
An extension of the coaching staff on the field
Have a lot of good tape on his game to build on
Win in prime time or a big game
There is a lot of question marks on him. Would you put your career and job on the line with a QB that’s been in the league for 4 years that has more questions then answers?
I think to be fare to Danny. He needs a reset. He does. He needs a new team. In a back up roll. Take a deep breath. Get out of the spot light and line of fire. Decompress for a year and if another opportunity presents itself take it.
If I was a GM regardless if it’s Danny or anyone else with a similar resume. I would not put my career on the line with Danny. Not with all those questions still to be answered.
Let’s look at it this way. Let’s say they love him and think they can win it all with him. They extend him 4 years. All in on Danny. Let’s go out in free agency and spend some money. Get him some better protection with proven talent. Let’s get him a receiver or 2. Let’s draft some lineman as well and receivers. Let’s build a deep talented offense for Danny to compete with. And they still struggle. Your dead meat. If they do all of the above but move on. They are buying not only time but there is a guy in place they can develop their way as well.
There is just way too much grey here for me. Schoen isn’t me. He is his own guy. Who knows how he feels. We do no this. Danny 5th year was not picked up. He has not been extended during the bye and the offense has struggled often. And it starts with the OC, play calling and quarterback.
