I needed to see more from Jones coming into the season and while I still haven’t seen enough to say he should be a long-term $30 million a year quarterback, I do believe it makes sense to bring him back for at least one more year and let the natural progression of the team continue. Keep him in the system, give him some more reliable receivers to throw to and let’s see how things improve. If it becomes clear he is not growing with the offense then they will have to consider making a change down the road but I believe he’s done enough to come back for at least one more year. Conversely, if he’s playing great next year then you give him a long-term extension during the season.
they don’t have a lot of options
a one year 32 million franchise tag
a one 28 million dollar transition tag allowing other teams to talk deal ,and give up 2 first round picks
or a long term Huge money deal ,go look at the extensions Allen ,and other true franchise guys with similar service time signed . Jones and his agent aren’t going to be thrilled with the giants turning down his option again , and trying to negotiate a cheap one year deal .
I can pro rate his numbers from 5 games to a full season , but they aren’t worth anywhere near a long term deal or a 30 million dollar contract ,not close.
I think a two year deal would do the job. Probably for $40M so $20M per year. If he shoots that down and you can’t work out a reasonable short term contract then I would use the transition tag on him.
As for his statistics, we need to look at what they’re asking him to do. Right now their passing game is only to take some of the pressure off the running game. They’re down to their fourth, fifth and sixth receivers. He’s basically being asked to manage the game at this point because they don’t have any threats at receiver. Also the pass blocking was absolutely atrocious until this week when it got a little bit better. Trust me I’m the last person to make any excuses for Daniel Jones because this is his fourth season but it is also impossible to ignore the fact that he’s had no protection and no receivers to throw to. The offense is clearly not airing it out and instead playing very conservatively. For what he’s been asked to do he’s done a good job.
At the same time it all comes down to what Daboll and Kafka and Schoen want to do. If they think he’s not the guy to truly open up their offense then they will clearly go with another quarterback next year. This is all just my opinion.
