Someone already said you are reading too much into the situation. It's not necessarily about what position is more important. It's getting Barkley locked up makes the most sense in every regard, so it was addressed first, and rightfully so. You know you want Barkley as a Giants lifer, see if the two sides can come up with a number during the short week to get a deal done.
If I am the GM of the Giants, I would have waited on Jones until after the season. Let's see how the whole thing plays out this year then tackle the negotiations with a clear viewpoint and a bit more time than the one week during the bye. And with Barkley locked up, the franchise tag is there if you need it.
Not to mention, QBs don't sign extension at that time of the year clearly, because you haven't been able to name one that has.
But I think that the best case scenario for Jones supporters is that Schoen keeps Jones for one more year to what he can do with better talent around him and another year under Kafka's system.
You do realize that there is no law, written or unwritten stating that a GM can't extend a QB during the season, right?
Additionally, there were commentators, analysts and people posting to this board that thought Jones wouldn't remain the starter past the bye week. Clearly that didn't happen and had no chance of happening. People are just not feeling the pulse of the situation.
And clearly, you are saying everything you can, to avoid having to admit, that extending a QB during the middle, or late season almost never happens. Maybe never. It's not about that it can happen, that's irrelevant. It's just that it doesn't happen for very practical reasons that apparent you don't see.
