I was listening to him on Patricia Traina’s podcast and he doesn’t sound like he’s too impressed with Daniel Jones. He uses the same points as those here that do not want him re-signed long term or for big money. He says his only big games came against the worst defenses at the end of the season, and that if you take away his success on the ground as a runner that’s he’s not even an average quarterback. I understand those points and they’re legit, I’ve never said they’re not. I just feel that he’s taken strides with Daboll and Kafka and Tierney. He looked like a better quarterback to me than in previous seasons. I also like the fact that the entire team loves him and gushes about him. That means something. Not even current teammates but former teammates and coaches. Joe Judge gushed about him a month or two ago. These people see him every day and know more than we do. So I trust them.
Ultimately we will see what Schoen does and we’ll have to trust him.
I for one am not a Danny hater nor do I like him. I do agree with this though. Danny does struggle when he is forced to win with his arm and his legs and the run game are limited. He does. So do a lot of NFL starting QBs. Only a handful can beat you straight up through the air.
Danny is what I call a half field reader. You have your first read, you have a second and a check down. Usually the second read is under or over the first read so Danny doesn’t have to reset his feet and get the ball out. Can he develop into a full field reader. Absolutely. Usually by year 4 regardless who your coaches are. You develop that. Either you have it or you don’t.
How Danny can overcome it is he needs to really be the smartest player on the field. He needs to be a step ahead of the defense and the coordinator calling plays. He has to understand what he is seeing, have complete understanding of the offense and know where to go with the ball pre snap. If it changes he still needs to understand post snap.
Peyton comes to mind. Definitely not athletic. Good arm but not great. Pocket guy. But he just understood the game at such a high level it didn’t matter. I’m not saying Danny has to get to that Lendl. But he still needs to get better at this. He is accurate when his feet are right and he sees it. He throws an outstanding ball. Off schedule play he is a mess. Look at the eagles games. They had heat on him all game. Danny does make a play here and there but he is no Mahomes or Burrow under pressure that’s for sure
Danny is a 12-17 QB in this league. And yes you can win it all with that. You need help though. You need health and an outstanding roster around him. But to his defense so do most QBs
