The Giants not committing $23M in guaranteed money to Jones in 2023 on the fifth year option after Jones was coming off a neck injury and an inconsistent career up to that point was the correct move. If they guaranteed Jones $23M in 2023 and he didn’t play well in 2022 then the Giants would be on the hook for $23M.
Now the Giants can use the franchise tag if they can’t come to a contract extension with Jones. Sure, the franchise tag is higher than the 5th year option would’ve been, but it was the right move by not guaranteeing $23m in 2023 in case Jones didn’t play well.
Year 1 of the Daboll era in regards to Jones was finding out if Jones could play well in Daboll and Kafka system. If Jones played well, you would have a good problem on your hand in terms of negotiating a new contract with Jones (with the tag in your back pocket to use). If not, you’re not locked into $23m cap hit. Not picking up the 5th year option didn’t reflect the new regimes thoughts on Jones, it was the smart decision for the franchise.
Yeah see I disagree. Under a good offensive coordinator (head coach) in shurmur Jones had 24 td passes in limited games and limited first team reps behind Eli. Then you give Jones a washed up oc and the most one of the most conservative head coach's in the history of the nfl, of course Jones wasn't gonna have good numbers. We all knew Jones can run and Daboll had success with a qb that can run in Buffalo. I'm not even really a Jones supporter but I always though this should of been a 2 year thing for Jones. As mara said they did everything possible to screw him up, well imo they continue to do so.
