7/29 Update:
Below is a nice yearly breakdown of Andrew Thomas' contract from Big Blue View. My take away is that it is fundamentally a 4 year contract with 67mm guaranteed. My guess is that if everything goes well there will be an additional extension with the 2027-2030 being included in an additional guarantee of at something in the neighborhood of 67mm which would effective result in Thomas receiving 134mm in guaranteed money. In 2029 Thomas will be 30 years old. I suspect the extension will take him to 33-35 years old. What we see here is how Schoen's approach to negotiations is a win-win type approach. He sets limits to what the Giants are exposed to in case of injuries or reduced player performance while providing substantial security to the player. With that said, it always takes both sides to be on the same wave length. In other words, it takes two to tango.
2026
Cap hit: $20.4 million
Base salary: $15.9 million ($15.404 million guaranteed)
Pro-rated signing bonus: $3 million
Per-game roster bonus: $1 million ($58,823 per game)

7/6 Update:
www.bigblueview.com/2023/7/6/23784942/new-york-giants-three-year-cap-health-ranked-10th-pff
Here are what I consider the key points of the article:
1. Jones, Lawrence and if extended Barkley will have to perform at a level that the Giants get a high return on dollars spent.
2. Andrew Thomas, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Evan Neal, and Deonte Banks have to actually live up to their potential.
3. Thibodeaux, Neal, McKinney, and Azeez Ojulari will need to take big steps forward.
4. The Giants currently have a total of 30 of their 2020-2023 draft picks still on the 90-man roster. How well the coaching staff can develop these picks will have a huge impact on the health of the CAP (potential cheap contracts) and in turn how well the Giants perform from 2023-2025 (quality of starters and depth on the roster).
5/15 Update:
My thoughts on the roster after the draft and free agency:
1. As goes DJ and Barkley so goes the Giants. RB depth is good. Gray could improve the drop off from Barkley. I am hoping that the combination of Breida and Gray will allow Barkley to be used more creatively and take some of the load off Barkley.
2. WR depth is quite good. Top level performance is greatly dependent on Waller staying healthy and how well Hyatt does and to what extent Hodgins can progress.
3. OL performance greatly depends on Thomas, Neal and Schmitz staying healthy.
4. Need another interior LBer.
5. Depth is good along DL. Elsewhere in the defense depth is greatly dependent on young players progressing.
6. In good shape with K,P, KOR, and PR. PR and KO coverage is a wait and see situation. The improved overall speed of the team should be beneficial to special teams.
2023 Rookie CAP Explanation (3/18)
The Rookie Cap is not a separate, distinct pool, but rather, a separate calculation and there is not a dollar-for-dollar correlation between the Rookie Cap and the overall Cap. So, while all of the Salary Cap numbers of a team’s draft picks must fit under the team’s Rookie Salary Cap, only amounts from the first and second round drafts will actually impact the Giants' overall Salary Cap. The reason for this is that only the top 51 salaries count towards the overall 2023 CAP of 224.8mm. Hence when a rookie is signed the 51st top salary drops off. Currently the 51st top salary for the Giants is 940,000. By the time the Giants are scheduled to draft in the third round the rookie CAP will be 957,000. So the net CAP increase will only be 17,000.
The CAP hit for the Giants in the first round will be 2.55mm minus 940,000 for a net impact of 1.61mm. The second round CAP hit will be 1.153mm minus 940,000 for a net impact of 213,000. The Giants currently have 7.89mm in CAP space. Unless the Giants move up in the draft, the overall CAP space will be reduced by 1.837mm for a net CAP space of 6.06mm.
3/17 Update:
According to overthecap.com the Giants 7.9mm in 2023 CAP space. That means the Giants already have enough CAP space to sign their draft choices and make in season roster moves due to injuries. Dexter Lawrence and Adoree' Jackson remain prime targets for extensions. Additional CAP space can be generated by reworking L. Williams' contract. From a team evaluation point of view, the following is what has been accomplished:
1. Retained D. Jones and S. Barkley.
2. Added depth and talent to the receivers corp. Shepard and Slayton were re-signed. Darren Waller (TE/Slot WR/H-Back), Jeff Smith (4.3 speed) and Perris Campbell (4.3 40 speed) were added. Isaiah Hodgins and Wan'Dale Robinson will be returning. The receiving corp will likely be further enhanced thru additional free agent additions and/or the draft.
3. A key hole in the defense was filled with ILB Bobby Okereke.
4. Outside LB Jihad Ward was re-signed.
5. Rakeem Nunez-Roches has been added to the DT depth.
6. RB Matt Breida was re-signed
7. Punter Jamie Gillan and long snapper Casey Kreiter were resigned.
Starting center Jon Feliciano remains unsigned. Nick Gates signed with Washington and Julian Love signed with Seattle. Cornerback, Center, Wide Receiver, Safety and ILB appear to be priorities as we head towards the draft.
3/8 Update:
Here is the critical aspects of Jones' contract: Length 4 years; guaranteed money 46mm; essentially a two year contract for 64mm; CAP hit of 19mm in 2023 and 45mm in 2024; if DJ is cut in 2025 the Giants get hit with 18mm in dead money; DJ's biggest year is in 2026 at 56mm which would very likely be reworked into an extension. In summary he is getting 41mm a year for two years to confirm that he is a franchise QB.
According to overthecap.com the Giants currently have 18.4mm in CAP space. I estimate that will go to about 31mm when they cut Golladay. There is still much more to be saved by reworking the contracts with L. Williams and/or A. Jackson.
Pre Free Agency CAP Summary
Currently the Giants are 46.8mm under the 2023 CAP which starts March 15th. However the Giants will have to reserve an estimated 11.4mm to sign their draft selections. An interesting aspect of this 11.4mm is that the team will get back approximately 8mm back in CAP space when they actually sign their draft choices. This is because each player will replace a player already counting against the CAP. Only 51 players count against the CAP until the 53 man roster is formally set in September. The reason that they do not get the entire 11.4mm back is because the total CAP hit in 2023 for their first and second round draft picks will be approximately 3mm more than the lowest 2 players on the 51 player roster. Bottom line is Schoen is currently working with about 35.4mm in 2023 CAP space.
In reading the various fan forum posts I have the impression that many members understand guaranteed money and length of contract play huge roles in negotiations. Guaranteed money generally covers deterioration of skill; being cut for CAP reasons and injuries. However guaranteed money can cover injuries only and some of the guaranteed money can become effective at a later date. These are just two reasons why contract reporting can be misleading. Here is a a link to a good article that discusses the salary CAP in detail. www.pff.com/news/nfl-salary-cap-terms-tricks-to-know-ahead-of-nfl-free-agency-2021
Pre Free Agency Contract Negotiations and CAP Management
1. Schoen's is very likely going to cut Denny Golladay. By cutting Denny Golladay with a post June 1st designation, the Giants would increase their 2023 CAP space from an estimated 35.4mm to about 48.9mm along with 7.9mm having to be absorbed as dead money in 2024. Dead money effectively reduces the total CAP that the Giants will have to work with in 2024.
2. With only 48.9mm in CAP space to work with, the contracts with L. Williams and A. Jackson has to be a major focus point with Schoen. Williams and Jackson's total 2023 CAP hit is 51mm. Of that 51mm Williams accounts for 32mm. The approach with Williams has two possibilities. A multi year extension or a rework to allocate a portion of his 18mm salary to hit in 2024. Since Williams becomes a free agent in 2024, my gut is telling me that a rework is more likely. It gives the Giants an additional season to decide whether to keep Williams and it gives Williams the opportunity to be a free agent. The downside of this approach is there already is 6mm in dead money in 2024 as a result of the last year of his current contract being a void year.
3. It is important to understand that already we are seeing how 2024 could be impacted by what Schoen does in 2023. My view is that it is likely that in order to be able to negotiate with Jones and Barkley effectively, Schoen is likely looking at a significant amount of dead money in 2024.
4. A. Jackson is also schedule to be a free agent in 2024. I am optimistic that an extension will be worked out that will free up 10mm in CAP space. That would give Schoen about 46mm to work with in 2023. We now can see how important Williams contract extension/rework is. An additional 10mm could easily be saved in 2023 CAP space. That would give Schoen the room he needs to effectively deal with Jones and Barkley.
5. I believe the negotiations with Jones and Barkley are highly dependent on what can be accomplished with Williams and Jackson. Schoen is going to need Jones and Barkley to be reasonable. We are just going to have to wait and see how everything shakes out from a CAP point of view.
6. With all of the above said, I would be remiss if I did not mention that Thomas and Lawrence will be free agents in 2024. In Thomas's case, the Giants will have the opportunity to pick up his 5th year option. Thomas and Lawrence do represent 22.6mm in 2023 CAP space. So working out an extension with one or both of them could yield substantial 2023 CAP space.
Team Evaluation
2022 was truly a remarkable season. For me the best part of the season was the coaching and support that Daboll got from Schoen and the scouting department. With the overall level of injuries in the NFL being what it is, roster depth is more important than ever. In my mind 2023 is a season to prove that we are truly at the beginning of a very successful era of Giants football. Here are my thoughts for what needs to be accomplished in this off season.
1. From what I have read and seen it is readily apparent that there is a consensus about the positions that are priority for upgrading. They are WR, interior OL, interior linebackers and cornerbacks. In addition maintaining the positions of strength that led to the success of 2022 is of utmost importance.
2. I do not think it is possible to do a complete team evaluation without the pre free agency negotiations and free agency itself is completed. I will be providing updates on my thoughts as important cuts and signings occur.
3. One thought that keeps popping up in my mind is how many of the upgrades that are needed are already on the team. With the outstanding coaching staff that the Giants currently have, there are a number of players that could progress to a point that priorities for upgrades would shift. As fans we can only speculate on how much better any of the current players might be in the 2023 season. With that said, I believe that we will see significant progress made by a number of players. My prime candidates for significant progress are Hodgins, Wan'Dale, Ezeudu, Bredeson, Neal, Bellinger, Thibs, Flott and A. Robinson.
4. In addition to Jones and Barkley, Giants free agents that I would like to see return are Slayton and Gates.
5. Obviously the return of both Jones and Barkley is the ideal goal as long as their contracts are CAP friendly. By that I am referring to their contracts not negatively influencing the CAP situations in 2024 and 2025. Given that the NFL CAP is projected to increase to 249mm in 2024 and 272mm in 2025 absorbing Jones' and Barkley's contracts is much more a challenge for 2023 than for future years. There has been an enormous amount of discussion about Jones and Barkley on the fan forum. So I will simply say that a CAP friendly multi year contract on both of them is the best outcome. I do believe that Jones is the real thing but needs to reinforce my belief in 2023. When healthy, Barkley is arguably the best RB in the league. For that reason I would be very cautious about the amount of guaranteed money.
6. In summary, I think that a reasonable argument could be made that the 2023 Giants will be better without any free agent signings other than their own free agents. Similar to the drafts of the 1980s and the 2007 draft, I think the 2023 draft could combine with the 2022 draft to form a foundation for great success going forward.

7/6 Update:
www.bigblueview.com/2023/7/6/23784942/new-york-giants-three-year-cap-health-ranked-10th-pff
