A terrible two line assessment, half of which is attempting to preempt any failure he might have with excuses blaming the rest of the offense. I have gotten to the point where I just want the freaking guy to play, succeed or fail. He's the biggest $40 million question mark in the league; which is ridiculous for a fifth year player.
The debate about the Giants offensive struggles fall into two camps. The "it's on Daniel Jones" camp. Or "it's on the oline/WR" group. The author clearly falls into the latter category. Both sides have their arguments and talking points. We've rehashed it all here so many, many times.
Jones moved the offense well at times last season. He appeared to grow more comfortable as the season progressed. The biggest drawback of the Giants offense was the lack of big plays. Adding Waller, and the plethora of WRs to the roster should help with that. Continued growth, by the Oline, is expected, although I would have liked to see more focus on it this offseason.
Jones has been an accurate downfield passer in the past. Without a deep threat, the offense had to dink and dunk in the passing game to have any success. The occasional deep throw to Slayton or Hodgins was not enough to keep defenses from stacking the box and slowing the run game. With the speed options now here on offense, can the Giants now add that quick strike threat to the budding offense? Will the offense be able to stretch the defense? If it can, Jones numbers will rise and the doubts about him will fall.
But until that happens, those of us with doubts about Jones will not feel entirely comfortable with him. And any criticism of the offense that doesn't start with Jones will be seen as excuse making. Just as the other side will see any criticism of Jones as being "haters". In the end the debate about Daniel Jones isn't going away.
