catch-22
noun
noun: catch-22; plural noun: catch-22s; noun: catch twenty-two; plural noun: catch twenty-twos
a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape because of mutually conflicting or dependent conditions.
"a catch-22 situation"
There are several layers of Catch 22's involving the NY Giants, most revolve around the quarterback & the offensive line. The QB can't throw. The line can't block. The line can't block. The QB can't throw.
Chapter 9
"Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. "
Where does Danny fall in this spectrum. I feel mediocrity has been thrust upon him. More on that later.
Chapter 12
"Open your eyes, Clevinger. It doesn't make a damned bit of difference who wins the war to someone who's dead."
The team as a whole can entertain this fine Joseph Heller passage. Are we to allow Danny to fall apart? Shall the defense not preform?
Are we a dead team or a live team? The way we acted and performed Sunday night felt dead. The loss itself was dwarfed by the magnitude of the bad play on our side.
Chapter 13
"You know, that might be the answer - to act boa!@#$lly about something we ought to be ashamed of. That's a trick that never seems to fail."
We played Sunday night! When I think about our passing game I think about 2022 when the coaches took away freedoms from Danny and dumbed down the offense and gave him progressive reads. This is when Robot-Danny was encouraged, he understood the reads now and he understood what the coaches wanted him to do.- RUN! The game was getting simpler for Danny but not slowing down a crucial difference.
I feel a great part of our coaching attempt with Danny has been in the Bengals mode. There Joe Burrow gets it done usually with a very bad offense line. He does well by getting the ball off extremely quick and it seems that was the crux of the coaching for Danny and it resulted in a good deal of improvement last season but not a lot plays down the field. We have receivers apparently now who are not getting the ball. I know the coach think here will be- quicker, tighter, faster-but defense's know this.. Even the great Bengals, their game plan is starting to be figured out.
Run all 1st half // Pass all 2nd half. Once I get the Cards into a mud minded, smash mouth groove I really want go against he grain here and air the ball out. I think to break out of a catch 22 set up you have to think against the norm.
Chapter 20
"He had failed miserably, had choked up once again in the face of opposition from a stronger personality. It was a familiar, ignominious experience, and his opinion of himself was low. "
The obvious move here this game is to run run run. And to get dirty ugly and I anticipate a low scoring slug fest.
The real answer I believe is to give Danny more freedom not less. Let him change plays. Let him throw the ball.
Chapter 39
"Morale was deteriorating and it was all Yossarian's fault. The country was in peril; he was jeopardizing his traditional rights of freedom and independence by daring to exercise them."
We have a chance this Sunday to re write the narrative. To go from a position of fear and adjustment to one of dictating and power.
Although we will open up with a good deal run--- Lets see just what we have in these new receivers... lets not shrink away from passing because we cannot block but pass even more. Pass It and they will Block. Success in the air will breed success on the ground and vice versa. It's a ball of negativity that we have to get rolling downhill and an outcome that we can dictate by blocking a second longer and trying a hell of a lot harder, playing fast and forgetting what just happened.
They say you can't fix the past if you forget the past. Catch 22 logic begs to differ...
