Thoughts on Devito

So you’re writing him off after just two games? What did you expect from an UDFA who was never expected to sniff playing time, let alone become the starter? Granted he has a long way to go. Circumstances have given this kid an opportunity and, thus far, he’s taken advantage of it. 5 TDs in his first two starts. Not too shabby, IMO.

You may be absolutely correct that he will not have a lengthy career, or one at all. But let’s see how it plays out the rest of the season. There has been much criticism by posters on this board complaining that the Giants are unable to develop their players. Let him play the rest of the season and see how it plays out. Taylor is going to cost some money, if he resigns with them. Wouldn’t it be nice if this kid develops well enough to be a capable #2 while saving them cap space?

The Giants might just have found a diamond in the rough. Stranger things have happened in the NFL.

Devito looks good. Granted they were playing one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Let’s see how he plays against the Patriots. Belichick eats rookie quarterbacks for breakfast. But I’m proud of Tommy. Tough kid and shows natural instincts. You can’t coach instincts.

If you can’t write him off after 2 starts you certainly can’t proclaim him a diamond in the rough either. Let’s just enjoy a bright spot in a dark season and let the outcome unfold on its own.

Who doesn't want to root for a walk-on or UFA who has a little success? Everybody does. Everybody loves an underdog.

I like him because he plays for the Giants. If he played for the Eagles, I'd hate his stinkin' guts.

That is exactly what Dabs said.  My take from Dabs comments is that Tommy's holding the ball too long is Dabs primary focus to correct.  For many years I have felt that there are many college players that for one reason of another do not get the opportunity to develop into an NFL player.  I think that Tommy D has been very lucky to end up being signed by a team that has a QB whisperer for a HC.  His progress from OTAs to now must be off the chart.  Sometimes something you do not expect falls into your lab.

Hey......gotta feel good for the kid. Terrific story. FWIW, even when he wasn't doing well out there, you don't get the sense he's down and out. I thought he made some throws NFL QBs make. Maybe he can turn into a career Backup QB. I'm not going to pretend this guy is going to be our next starting QB....but hey, he's going to get NFL reps most of the rest of this season and we'll see what he can do. I'm rooting for him and it would be nice to actually groom/develop a player on a team where it feels like many of our drafted guys fall short and crater.

This was prob one of our best COached games all season. Not against a top notch team.......but it was a well coached game and something the whole squad should feel good about.

What I don’t understand is why people are acting like there’s absolutely no chance that Devito can ever be a good starting quarterback. People talk about how much he’s improved, but then immediately say that at best he can be a backup quarterback in this league. Sometimes I get the feeling like people think this is just some kid from high school that the Giants decided to give a shot to. He played at Syracuse for several years before finishing his career at Illinois. He’s played well everywhere that he’s been. He played well in training camp and preseason. There’s been guys like Kurt Warner who was stocking shelves at the grocery store before finally catching on in the NFL and then became a phenomenal quarterback. Why is it so outlandish to believe that Devito can actually become a good quarterback?
