I haven’t posted much. Been doing my predict the score threads. Other than that I have been only in response mode. I even dialed it back a lot. I have been taking a deep breath and thinking. Watching other games and paying attention to offensive line play and QB play accross the board. I also been watching college football and seeing a pretty similar thing happening especially at Quarterback.
First of all. Evan Neal. I went back and watched only highlights of Alabama when he played. I can see why he was drafted high. He has good feet, hands and bend. Athletic and rarely got beat. If we turned back time not knowing what we know now. Neal would have been selected just as high. I also know all NFL teams are only allowed 12 full contact practices all spring and summer. 12!! Now how is any young offensive lineman supposed to get any real reps that way? They are literally learning on the fly. You also have to remember some of the top pass rusher play for the Eagles, Cowboys and Washington. That’s no small task for any young OT in the NFC East. I do hear rumbling about other lineman taken by other teams all over the draft and are not struggling as much. Well that’s not really accurate either. Offensive line play is poor accross the board according to Paul Alexander on Sirius Xm moving the chains. What I can see happening with teams having more success is they are getting the ball out faster and are more consistent running the ball. I think Neal will turn the corner next year much like Thomas did in year 3
As for QB play. Not only was Jones struggling with free rushers and finding the void on coverage but it’s happening everywhere too. That’s no excuse for Jones or any NFL Qb especially in year 5. They are just not taught that in college. As a matter of fact most quarterbacks in college don’t even hurtle or play under center. It’s all shotgun and RPO type stuff. It also appears it’s that 1 read, check down or run type offenses that we see Jones and a lot of QBs having success with. When asked to sit back and go through progressions QBs at this level are really struggling. And defenses are sending more and more free rushers banking on the QB not picking it up and getting the ball out.
My question is. Why isn’t this being taught anymore at the NFL level? Are these young NFL coaches too arrogant to teach and develop these QBs or are there systems and play calling the rule all? My guess is coaching today isn’t what it used to be.
