So which ones of schoen moves have been good exactly ?
Signing jones to that contract,a train wreck move that will hurt the franchise for a long time
trading for Waller, a guy with a bad injury history and get shocked when he gets hurt again
drafting Neal 7 th, a disaster .
where are the late round picks that have contributed ?
His best moves to give him credit is getting a 2 nd for lw, the Okereke signing had been good
thbs has been productive if inconsistent .
I think the best thing Schoen has done is get the salary cap situation under control. Schoen took over in 2022 and the Giants were $12M over the 2022 salary cap. His first free agent class was full of one year contracts except for two: QB Tyrod Taylor (2-years, $11M) and OG Mark Glowinski (3-years, $18M). Taylor has proven to be a valuable backup signing and Glowinski's contract isn't exactly restricting.
In 2023 free agency, the Giants had $46M to work with thanks to Schoen's discipline in year 1. He re-signed Daniel Jones with a cap hit of $17M (compared to $29M for the Transition Tag) and franchise tagged Barkley prior to the start of free agency. You have made it clear you didn't like the moves at the time and I give you credit for that, but I think it was the right move at the time. Schoen made one splash in LB Bobby Okereke and I'd say he's played at close to an All-Pro level at MLB. Schoen extended Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas. They're both locked up before hitting free agency and there contracts will eventually look like bargains. Lawrence and Thomas are two players you build around. Smart to lock them up.
In terms of the Waller trade, the Giants gave up a 3rd rounder, which they acquired from the Chiefs when they traded Kadarius Toney (which was a good move getting him off the team, right?). They still had a 3rd round pick (ended up being Hyatt). Waller was a risk/reward type of trade. It hasn't worked out so far, but it was worth the risk IMO because there were no #1 WR in free agency and they felt like adding Waller would open things up for the offense. I don't know if Waller is on the team in 2024, but it was worth the risk that just hasn't worked out.
Even with Jones' "catastrophic contract" (which is how some describe it) the Giants will have approximately over $30M in cap room in 2024 and that is prior to any cuts or contract restructures. The Giants can easily create $10-20M more in cap room. Schoen has fixed the Giants salary cap issues that Gettleman left the Giants in.
Even though we as fans have dealt with a lot of losing football since 2013, this was never a 1 or 2 year fix and Schoen has gotten us out of salary cap hell and is building through the draft.
So 70 million in cap space the next 2 years to a qb who averaged .33 passing td's per game this year is not salary cap hell?
