If the Giants do simple base salary restructures to Andrew Thomas, Dexter Lawrence, Bobby Okereke and Darren Waller, they can free up $34.8M according to Sportrac's roster management tool. Add Glowinski's $5.6M savings when his cut and that's $40.4M of cap room created with just 5 transactions and not even touching Jones' $47M cap hit.
There's no telling if that's what they will do, but money can easily be created. How much they want to create will depend on how aggressive they want to be in free agency and how much they want to "push down the road." But that's how you have to operate under a salary cap. Some teams are more aggressive than others when it comes to pushing money down the road. The Giants are on the least aggressive side, IMO.
Look no further than the Eagles and how they spread out the cap hits on Jalen Hurts' 5-year, $255M extension. They added on 4 years of void money to really lower his cap hits in the first couple of years. They are one of the more aggressive teams in terms of pushing money down the road and keeping cap hits real low in the first few years.
Will be interesting to see what salary cap gymnastics Schoen and the Giants do in order to operated for 2024. But there are ways to free up money other than just simple releasing of players.
So we shouldn't have extended Andrew Thomas and Dexter Lawerence since the Giants aren't ready for a playoff push?
