Jones was not a mediocre QB in 2022. He played, in the words of his general manager, at a high level, carrying the Giants brutally bad offense to the playoffs, two wins from the Super Bowl. Along the way, he finished the season with one of the best QBRs and the lowest INT rate in the NFL
But Jones was a better QB in 2022 than he is now even though the team around him is stronger.
I'm not sure if Jones is a mediocre QB in 2024. More alarming, Jones has been a terrible QB for 2 of the 6 games and that isn't very encouraging. In an 18 game season, that would mean that Jones sucks in 6 of those games.
Not giving up on Jones, but he is running out of time to prove that he should be the long term QB for the Giants. He needs to string together a lot of really good games starting......now.....
I'm not sure what to think about his drop off in performance at home and on the national stage. Is he trying too hard? Is the pressure getting to him? Do the Giants know why he struggles in these games? Is it psychological?
Bottom line: he will need to perform at a super-high level from this point forward or his days wearing the Giants blue are over at the end of the season.
Even if they draft a QB in ‘25, given that none are considered can’t miss, franchise QBs, chances are he doesn’t start.
So I don’t think it’s as cut and dry, as others do, that Jones is gone after this year. If he continues playing mediocre and the Giants hover near the .500 mark, he could very well be back in ‘25.
Cutting him at the end of ‘25 would only cost them 11.1 mil in dead cap space.
