Giants 2019 Draft Class
SALARY CAP POSITION | Spotrac | Over The Cap | NFLPA
August 6th Update: As projected in the May 26th update, the Giants currently have 6mm in CAP space. That is sufficient for in season player movements that might be required due to injuries. It is also sufficient for picking up players who are cut from other teams. This update will focus on the CAP for 2020. Currently the Giant have 55mm in 2020 CAP space. Manning is the only player currently on the Giants roster that would represent a big CAP hit as a free agent. Other current starters that will be free agents in 2020 are Halapio, Remmers, and Goodson. That leaves the Giants in very good shape CAP wise in 2020. There is no CAP barrier to extending Manning. If Manning has a good to very good year, I can see him being extended. Even should the Giants decide to extend Manning, the Giants are in excellent CAP shape to sign their own free agents as well bringing in a number of players during the 2020 free agency period.
Looking past 2020 Engram, Tomlinson, Martin, Jenkins, Peppers, and Bethea are the current starters that become free agents in 2021. I project the Giants having approximately 80mm in CAP space for 2021. They currently have 38 players signed for the 2021 season. Therefore, the projected 80mm will be used on 15 players to fill out the 53 man roster. That places the Giants in terrific shape CAP wise for 2021. I do not see Jenkins and Bethea being signed for the 2021 season. Therefore, CAP wise, there should not be a problem signing Engram, Tomlinson, Martin and Peppers if that is what the Giants want to do.
Gettleman has to be given credit for achieving the good to excellent CAP shape that the Giants are in for 2020 and 2021. So far the 2018 draft looks very promising. The potential for a great 2019 draft is certainly there. How the first round draftees (Jones, Lawrence and Baker) turn out will greatly influence just how good the 2019 draft is.
The 2020 free agency period should have a profound positive impact on improving roster depth. In terms of where the Giants are going, the fact that there is no CAP barrier to extending Manning should he have a good to very good year is important. In addition, the fact that the 2021 CAP space allows the Giants to sign as many of the current starters that become free agents in 2021 as they want is cause for some degree of optimism. With that said, even more important is just how successful the 2018 and 2019 drafts turn out to be.
May 26th Update: Spotrac and Over The CAP show the Giants having 15.6mm in CAP space. When all draft picks are signed, they will have approximately 6mm in CAP space. That puts them in good shape for late offseason signings and in season moves. From a pure CAP point of view, the players that represent significant post June 1st 2019 CAP savings are Jenkins (10.25mm) and Ellison (4.2mm). The only way I see them being cut is a not likely very poor performance in the preseason.
The current 2020 CAP space I am projecting is approximately 45mm which includes the entire 2019 draft bringing the total players signed for the 2020 season to 60 players. With 60 players signed, this is the highest figure projected for the next year's Giants CAP space in the past 20 years. Obviously the big question for 2020 is whether Eli will be a Giant or not. I am thinking that will not only depend on how well Eli plays but also how well the following players play all of whom represent significant CAP savings in 2020:
Jenkins 11.2mm
Ogletree 10mm
Zeitler 10mm
S. Shepard 6.5mm
Ellison 5mm
K. Martin 4.8mm
It is interesting to me that cutting any two of the above players or any one of the top three players in 2020 significantly covers what Eli would make in 2020.
April 6th Update: The Giants currently have approximately 4.2mm in CAP space. Spotrac and Over The CAP show 11.6mm -11.8mm in CAP space not including the impact that the draft will have and the cost of two additional players to make up the final 53 man roster. Since the 12 picks will replace the bottom 12 player CAPs, the impact is not the total rookie draft pool of 13.8mm. The actual impact is 13.8mm minus the total of 6.5mm for the bottom 12 player salaries. Thus, we have 11.7mm minus 6.5 for the draft minus 1mm for an estimated 4.2mm for late off season signings and in season roster moves.
The 4.2mm is tight to manage late off season signings and in season roster moves. Typically, players that are injured and put on IR are replaced with players earning around 500k which would be prorated based on the number of weeks actually on the roster. Any violation of the CAP carry a 5mm penalty for each violation and contracts can be cancelled. What all NFL teams have in their hip pocket are contract modifications that can be executed on an as needed basis to stay within their CAP. The 4.2 mm probably is sufficient to handle at least 6 in season roster moves. Late off season signings typically are offset by cuts leading up to the final 53 man roster. With all of that said, the one player cut that would have a significant impact on the CAP is Janoris Jenkins. Cutting Jenkins would save 7mm in CAP space. An additional CAP impact would be an extension of Eli's contract which could easily save 5mm in CAP space.
March 22nd Update: With the most recent signings of DeOssie, Fowler and Lippet, the 2019 roster is set pending the draft and late offseason signings. The Giants have approximately 13mm in CAP space which puts them in a very good position for late offseason signings and in season moves. I have taken a look at the roster/CAP situation for 2020. For the first time that I can remember, the Giants have no dead money in 2020. In addition they have 34 players signed and approximately 86mm in 2020 CAP space. The draft will likely increase the number of signed players to at least 44 players and reduced the 2020 CAP space by 9mm to 77mm. If we presume that Eli's last season will be 2020 at a cost of 17mm, that leaves 60mm in CAP space. I can not remember the Giants ever being in that kind of positive CAP position and I have been tracking the CAP for 20 years. All of this is a direct consequence of the trades of OBJ, Vernon and JPP. It is also a consequence of the Gettleman taking a huge 33.8mm CAP hit this year in dead money. In my view, this puts a very positive perspective on Gettleman's stewardship to date. It also puts the importance of the upcoming draft in perspective. Gettleman has done an excellent job with CAP management. Now he needs to ensure a strong draft.
March 17th Update: This update will focus on the CAP and what the current starting lineups looks like. The two websites that track team CAPs are spotrac and overthecap. The following figures are from spotrac which gives the reader a good understanding about how the CAP is constructed.
YORK GIANTS CAP TOTALS
Adjusted Salary Cap
(2019 CAP plus rollover or carryover from 2018)
$194,100,000
Active Contracts:
$148,934,313
Dead Cap:
$33,879,730
2018 Rollover:
$5,900,000
Total (All):
$182,814,043
Total (Top 51):
$178,779,043
Est. Cap Space (Top 51):
(adjusted salary CAP minus top 51 paid players. A 53 man roster would decrease CAP space by about 1mm)
$15,320,957 (actually about 13.6mm as Spotrac is including the #70 pick that was used last season in the supplemental draft)
Here are the players that make up the dead CAP. Dead CAP represents unamortized bonuses at the time of trade, cut or retirement.
Odell Beckham, Jr. $16,000,000
Olivier Vernon $8,000,000
Damon Harrison $3,200,000
Patrick Omameh $3,000,000
Eli Apple $2,304,967
Davis Webb $383,210
Connor Barwin $365,000
Jonathan Stewart $250,000
Darian Thompson $209,284
Avery Moss $127,390
Jerell Adams $35,716
Calvin Munson $3,334
Josh Banks 834
TOTAL $33,656,400
Here is how the Giants draft picks impact their CAP space. As you can see there is a huge drop in CAP impact between pick #6 and pick 17. It is unrealistic to think that all 13 picks if actually used will make the team. Therefore the projected draft pool impact is a bit overstated. I only consider the 1st and 2nd round picks to have a significant impact on CAP management. The rest works out to be a wash when considering that the bottom 10 paid players on the final 53 man roster will likely be 570k or less.
Round 1, Pick #6 - - - - - - - - $4,634,581

Projected Draft Pool: $13,739,501
Current starting lineup:
Offense starters: Mannning, Barkley, Solder, Hernandez, Halapio, Zeitler, Wheeler, Engram/Ellison, Shepard, Tate/Latimer
Offense depth: Tanney, Gallman, Greco, Pulley, R. Shepard, J. Davis, Simonson
Comments: I am expecting Wheeler to become depth at tackle. In addition to upgrading RT, I can see RB and WR being a priority during the draft.
Defense starters: Hill, Tomlinson, Pierre, Martin, Goodson, Ogletree, Golden, Haley, Jenkins, Peppers and Bethea
Defense depth: Wynn, McIntosh, Carter, Davis, Moss, Beal,Thomas, Riley and Hamilton
Comments: Priorities for the draft are depth at on the DL especially NT, an edge rusher, CB and depth a safety including a future starting FS.
Summary: Most readers will immediately picked up on the fact that I left out Eli's successor. I believe that if and this is a big if, the Giants can come away with a starting RT and WR and increased depth at RB on offense as well as a starting CB, an edge rusher, a true NT, and a future FS in the draft, they would be a highly competitive team. Coming away with Eli's successor would be great but not as critical as some think.
March 12th Update: This update will focus on the Beckham trade and the signing of S Antoine Bethea. I am thrilled about the Beckham trade primarily for a number of reasons. Beckham has not been able to stay on the field. Barkley is a RB and WR wrapped up in one body. I believe Barkley has better hands than Beckham. The Giants now have 13 draft picks including 2 first rounds, a second round and a 3 round pick giving them 4 picks in the first 100. Add in Biel who was a 3rd round supplementary pick and the Giants have the potential for establishing a young foundation of players that are inherently CAP friendly.
From a CAP point of view the Beckham trade represents a 2.2mm CAP savings. This includes a 5mm net savings on Beckham minus the 2.8mm CAP hit for S Jabril Peppers. According to PFF grades, Peppers is an above average starting safety in both run defense and pass coverage. In 2018 PFF ranked Peppers as the 19th best safety in the NFL while Collins was ranked 39th. To top it off, Peppers is only 23 years old and is CAP friendly through 2020. He becomes a UFA in 2021.
Antoine Bethea is a veteran free safety and is 34 years old. A former sixth-round pick out of Howard in 2006, Bethea has been steady for more than a decade. He's a three-time Pro Bowler who won a Super Bowl with the Colts . Bethea rarely leaves the field.
Last season, while adjusting to a new scheme (Cardinals went from 3-4 to 4-3) under new coaches, Bethea played 99.64 percent of Arizona's defensive snaps.
He's missed one game over the past three seasons. Bethea excels in pass coverage and was particularly effective in 2017 when current New York Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher was with Arizona. The Giants and Bethea agreed to a 2 year contract. Terms have unknown at this time.
March 8th Update Correction: I misunderstood how dead money is handled in a trade prior to June 1st. The 8mm in unamortized bonus money for Vernon is absorbed by the Giants in the current year rather than next year. Had he been traded after June 1st, the Giants would have absorbed 4mm in 2019 and 4mm in 2020. Hence the Giants end up saving 3.5mm in 2019 CAP space and 5.5mm in 2020 CAP space. From a big picture point of view, the Giants currently have approximately 32mm in CAP space including 11.3mm in draft pool. Since the projected 11 drafted players will replace the 11 lowest paid players, the actual impact to the CAP will be about 5-6mm. That will leave 5-6mm that can be used for in season moves and signings at the end of the off season. The Giants have approximately 21mm that they can use during free agency.
March 8th Update: The big news today is the trade with the Browns for guard Kevin Zeitler in exchange for Olivier Vernon. A good trade for both teams. In my view the key element that makes this trade a bit better for the Giants is that Zeitler has not missed a game in the past four years. In comparison Vernon has missed 9 games in the past 2 years. Otherwise it comes down to an offensive veteran for a defensive veteran. The rest of this update will focus on the CAP ramifications from the trade.
Trading Vernon prior to June 1st saves 11.5mm in 2019 CAP space and increases 2020 dead money by 8mm. The addition of Zeitler adds 10mm in salary. There is 4.8mm in remaining bonus amortization on Zeitler's contract and 8mm remaining in bonus amortization on Vernon's contract. I am presuming that the Browns will absorb the dead money associated with Zeitler's contract and the Giants agreed to absorb the dead money associated with Vernon's contract. It that turns out to be true, then the 8.5mm in 2020 dead money increased with be offset by the difference between what Vernon would have received in 2020 compensation minus what Zeitler will receive in 2020 compensation. Vernon/s contract calls for 17.5mm in 2020 compensation while Zeitler is set to receive 10mm in 2020 compensation. Hence if the trade did not include any adjustments in each teams CAPs for 2019 and 2020 then the net result for the Giants is a 9.5mm CAP savings in 2019 (15.5mm salary plus 4mm bonus amortization that is push to 2020 minus 10mm for Zeitler's salary). In addition the Giants will absorb 8mm in 2020 dead space while saving a net of 5.5mm in salaries. Hence the Giants will lose 2.5mm in 2020 CAP space. From a roster point of view, the Giants may be one position RT away from having a solid OL. The other position in question is center and the hope is that Halapio will fully recover from his injury and continue to perform well at center.
February 16th update: In my initial evaluation of the team I had forgotten about CB Sam Beal who was selected in the 3rd round supplemental draft last year. He was drafted with a known shoulder injury that ultimately led to his missing the 2018 season. According to media reports, the Giants were not intending for him to play much given the existing shoulder injury and that at 177 lbs he was not physically developed enough for the NFL. Beal originally was going to play the 2018 season in college but was declared ineligible by the NCAA due to the academic level of the courses he was taking. This was due to an oversight by the college administration. He was projected to be a late 1st round early second round pick in the upcoming draft.
In addition to having surgery on his shoulder, the Giants used him as an advanced secondary scout. He watched videos of receivers for each week's game prior to the team practicing for the game. Two things were accomplished. The Giants secondary was given up front scouting reports on the receivers and Beal became very familiar with each team's receivers and the way they are used. The hope is that he will be able to step into a starting role. Some have speculated that Beal's presence is why the Giants traded Apple.
In my original evaluation below, I indicated that it is my opinion that given Jenkins 2018 performance it is my opinion that the Giants do not have a starting CB on their roster. If Jenkins can make a comeback and Beal does fulfill his potential then there will be a significant upgrade at CB. Come September we will find out. Meanwhile it will be interesting to see what the Giants do in free agency and the draft relative to the cornerback position. End of Update
The following is a summary of the challenges facing the Giants:
1. For me the number 1A priority is upgrading the offensive line. At a minimum, the Giants need a RT. At a maximum the Center and RG positions need upgrading. How the Giants approach these three positions in the off season will tell us a great deal about how they feel about Jamon Brown, Jon Halapio, Spencer Pulley and Evan Brown. I suspect that as long as Halapio recovers well from his surgery, they will stick with him as the starter. My take on Jamon Brown is that he makes a good back up. Thus I am hoping that they will upgrade the RG and RT positions.
2. IMO the 1B priority is upgrading the LB corp at least at one of the interior linebackers and the edge defender opposite Vernon.
3. Sadly we have a 1C priority in upgrading the CB positions. The big question in my mind is what happened to Janoris Jenkins. Given Jenkins 2018 performance along with the performance of the other CBs on the roster, a very reasonable argument can be made that the Giants do not have a NFL starting CB on the roster.
4. If the Giants do not sign Landon Collins (he is an UFA) then the Giants do not have an NFL starting SS and FS on the roster. I continue to believe that Collins would be an excellent SS if he is paired with a solid FS.
5. Of course efforts will be made to upgrade the roster in general.
6. Clearly a successor to Eli is required. I strongly suspect that the priorities listed above will take at least one additional off season. Therefore I am not expecting Gettleman to spend a 1st round draft choice on a QB. Drafting a QB in the second round is IMO unlikely but not inconceivable.
Over the past 20 years I have observed a continual improved understanding of the CAP by fans in general. Therefore I want to focus on how the numbers at Spotstrac and Ovethecap can be misleading. When looking at their numbers, we need to remember that only 51 salaries apply to the CAP up till when the final 53 man roster is set. Therefore the amount of dollars that a team has to have to sign their draft choices must be adjusted to take into consideration that all draft choices will be at or above the 51st lowest salaries. If the Giants do not trade any of their draft picks to move up or down in the draft their rookie draft pool is $10.9mm. The Giants have 10 draft picks. To get the true CAP impact, the 10 lowest paid players have to be subtracted from the $10.9mm (7x$495k + 3x$570k). Thus the actual impact of the draft pool for the Giants is 10.9mm - 5.2mm equalling 5.7mm.
In terms of individual contracts, it is important to focus on how much money is guaranteed and typically most large long term contracts are really three year contracts. At that point the team can cut the player or extend the contract in order to lower the player's CAP number. The big CAP bargain are within the first 5 years of a player's career and the biggest CAP hit is when a player with a large contract extending beyond 3 years is cut, has a career ending injury or is traded within the first three years of his contract.
Currently the Giants have approximately $33mm in CAP space. Landon Collins is the only UFA that represents a significant CAP hit and that CAP hit would not start until 2020. That is because his signing bonus would be averaged out over the length of the contract which would likely be 5 years. There are only three players that represent possible significant CAP savings. Eli, Jenkins and Vernon. The potential CAP savings associated with Eli is 17mm. I do not see the Giants cutting him. I doubt Eli will take a salary/bonus cut and I do not see him retiring. So the question becomes whether a contract extension can be worked out to include 2020 and 2021 even though it is likely that 2020 will be Eli's last year as a Giant.
Janoris Jenkins represents a possible 7.8mm CAP savings. However cutting or trading him would generate 7mm in 2020 dead money. The key question is why his level of play fell off so dramatically. It would not surprise me if the Giants cut him. Vernon represents an 11.5mm CAP savings and 8mm in 2020 dead money if he was traded or cut. PFF graded him as the 13th best edge defender in the NFL. If the Giants agree with that grade, then he is here to stay. He graded out much better as a pass rusher vs a run defender. I am thinking that is a result of him selling himself out on the pass rush due to virtually no other pass rush pressure coming from the front 7.
From a CAP point of view, it looks like 33-40mm is what the Giants have to work with this off season depending on the final status of Jenkins. The Giants currently have 77mm in estimated CAP space in 2020 with 30 players signed. An additional 5.6mm will be needed for bringing the roster up to 40 players which would include the 23 lowest paid players. Thus, they have about 71mm for 13 additional players or 5.4mm per player. That puts them in a position to be somewhat active in free agency. However, I believe that the upcoming draft is far more important than whatever the Giants do in free agency. A strong draft will propel the Giants into a playoff level team. A weak draft will set the team back for a number of years.
