Prior to the start of the season, this team looked poised to contend for a division title and make a run. Here we are at Week 8 (bye week), the Giants are 1-6 and making a run at a top 5 draft pick instead. Now the question is, will there be major changes for 2018. I could be wrong, but I think the entire fan base is now in agreement:
In Reese We Must FIRE!
Yesterday's Press Conference should be the nail in the coffin for Reese as GM. It was a total embarrassment. He actually said "Games are not won on Sunday's, they're won during the week at practice." Huh? His reasoning for not going after Andrew Whitworth because they want a younger roster just reeks of incompetence to me. So you didn't improve the OL because you wanted to get younger? Whitworth is still playing at an All-Pro level. His skill set is not diminishing. You could've structured the contract so in case of injury or declining play it doesn't have a big impact on your cap. The LA Rams were smart enough to sign Whitworth to protect the franchise QB (a second year player), but the Giants passed on him because they want a young roster? It's infuriating. We're a win now team. That's a win-now move and you pass on it with the mindset of a re-building team. It's frustrates me more the more I think about it as I write it here. Eli Manning is under contract in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Whitworth would've been a smart move. But Reese doesn't think so because he wants a young roster. Stupid me for thinking the Giants were just outbid in the FA market for the OL available. No, it was pre-planned stupidity.
Owner John Mara seems to want to keep a level of stability within the franchise. That's why he promoted Reese in 2007 after Ernie Accorsi retired. That's why he promoted McAdoo after Tom Coughlin resigned (forced out the door) and they kept most of the coaching staff in place. But I think the fan base is in agreement on this too:
FIRE Ben McAdoo, too!
Yes, he had an 11-5 record last year. But he made ZERO adjustments to his offense this year UNTIL he lost his top 4 WRs, three of them to season ending IR. He started the season using 11 personnel 80-90% of the time just like he was last year. I understand why he does it, to get the best players on the field as often as possible. But results matter. Your offense only scored 19.6 PPG in 2016 good for 26th overall in the NFL. So far here in 2017, the team is averaging 16 points per game. It can't all be attributed to the depleted WR core. They were 0-4 when they played the Chargers on that dreadful Sunday in Week 5. Waiting until the WR core is completely decimated to give play calling duties to OC Mike Sullivan? Running 11 personnel wasn't exactly giving this offense success. They struggled a year ago to score 20 points in a game. He's supposed to be an offensive mind, but that hasn't been the case.
I don't know if John Mara will fire Ben McAdoo after hand picking him to be the next head coach after just two seasons, but he should.
Reese and McAdoo should be shown the door. The next HC should be able to hire his entire staff. If he wants to keep someone that's on this staff than that's fine but it should be his decision, not ownership.
With a potential top 5 pick, GM Jerry Reese should not be given the opportunity to make this pick. He showed yesterday that he is not the right man for the job anymore.
