1. How can injuries possibly be an excuse for Mara to give Reese and McAdoo a pass for this lost ‘17 season, when the Offense has been anemic for 22/23 regular season games under McAdoo, dating back to all last season. Injuries were not a factor then, and have never been a factor in the horrible play of the OLine that Reese neglected to seriously address. They got rid of Ray Handley when he turned out to be a disaster as HC, so why is it so unheard of to get rid of McAdoo for the same reason?
No one is using injuries as an excuse to give this team a pass. Were the receivers and Olivier Vernon injured the first four weeks of the season when the team looked like garbage? I’ve addressed McAdoo in a later answer, but I wouldn’t compare him to he-who-must-not-be-named. McAdoo has his warts, but I think as he grows into the job, those will go away.
2. As a reporter, how does the bye week affect your week.
My workload is a smidge lighter and obviously I get to enjoy a nice four-day weekend (though to be honest, this weekend I’ll be working on the Inside Football subscriber renewal package.) The other good thing is I don’t have to fight traffic to get to and from East Rutherford, and I usually devote the bye week to doing all those “me” things I can’t get to in-season, like doctor’s appointments and spending extended time with family.
3. Who is more on the hot seat...Reese or McAdoo?
I would say Reese. In McAdoo’s case, he’s inexperienced but he’s learning on the job, and if I’m ownership, I don’t give up on him yet. Reese, on the other hand, has been the GM of this team for 10 years. He’s had several bad drafts and has made several poor personnel decisions that I believe have set this franchise back several years. Look, I like Jerry –I think he’s a good man and an honest man. But the job he’s done as GM has been terrible. I can’t give him credit for the 2007 Super Bowl season and the 2011 team kind of snuck up on everybody. thanks to Reese’s poor draft decisions, they had to spend boatloads on mulligans (Vernon for Damontre Moore, Jackrabbit for Amukamara, and Harrison for Marvin Austin) which in turn left them with not enough to compete financially this year for offensive linemen or to re-sign Hankins. It’s been a vicious cycle and it needs to be broken. Last point: After 2013, the Giants changed their offensive coordinator. After 2014, they changed their defensive coordinator. After 2015, they changed their head coach. Last year they all got a reprieve, but this year they’re back to what has sadly become the norm since 2011. What didn’t’ change over that period? The GM and the special teams coordinator. And my guess is if there is a change, it’s not going to be Tom Quinn.
4. Seems like Keenan Robinson has not been as effective this season Pat. Do the Giants just miss Sheppard with Goodson being the new starter? Is Robinson just not 100%?
Kelvin Sheppard wasn’t a coverage linebacker, so I wouldn’t say that they “miss” him in that regard (I would say they miss his intelligence, though.) With Robinson, I think it’s a combination of not being 100 percent coupled with missed assignments. I can’t prove the latter, but when I watch film, there are times when it looks like Robinson is unsure of what to do and he ends up guessing wrong. I thought this was a problem last year as well, but just not as pronounced.
5. Which one of these 4 WR on the roster do you think/the Giants think can elevate their game a little bit the rest of the season?
Sterling Shepard. I could see him getting more snaps on the outside, though I have my doubts as to whether that’s the best place to use him. What choice do they have though?
6. Pat, thanks again for taking our questions. Do you think a veteran receiver like Greg Jennings or Anquan Bolden could help the squad the rest of the season? These rooks and backups just look lost on the field and seem to have hands of stone .. Someone who would fight for the reception and be a possession receiver would help imho.
No. Boldin hasn’t played in how long? He’d need to get back into football shape, and by the time he does that, it’s like why bother? And I believe Jennings s retired. Right now, I think the only option the Giants have is to ride it out with what they have.
7. There is still a lot of football left to be played, but I can't help but think about what the future holds with a potential top 5, top 3 draft pick staring us in the face. Do you think there is a better than 75% chance that both Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo are fired after the season? Or is it more likely GM Jerry Reese is let go and McAdoo stays? Or do they keep Reese in the front office and hire a GM like Scott Pioli? The status quo seems unacceptable at this point.
Reese and/or McAdoo are either back or they’re not—there is no putting a percentage on a “yes or no” question. With that said, let’s see how the remainder of the season goes as that will clarify things. I do think McAdoo is safe, regardless. I’m not so sure about Reese for reasons I cited in a previous answer.
8. What is your sense of how the rest of the season will evolve.
As I write this, I haven’t been in the building or around the players since Tuesday so I really don’t know. I’ll get a better vibe next week when everyone, including the media, gets back in the building.
