Totally accurate. Eli is now a bottom tier QB. I think the Giants know it too, which is why (1) Eli wasn't extended beyond this year even though the move would have opened up cap space; and (2) the Giants drafted a QB at 6 and thus acted with urgency.
Why didn't they take a QB in the 2018 draft? Simple. Gettleman and Shurmur evaluated Manning from afar (Shurmur had not yet coached him on a day-to-day basis) and they reached the wrong conclusion. They thought Eli could still play at a high level. They were wrong.
After one full season of watching Eli take another crap in the bed, Gettleman and Shurmur realized that Eli can't play at a high level anymore (and thus Marc Ross was right all along--he said the same thing about Eli a year earlier) and they abandoned ship and found a new QB. Eli wasn't cut for two reasons: (1) Eli's place in Giants history--he is a Giants legend. No one has played more games in a Giants uniform than Eli. While Eli won't make the HOF right away, he deserves to have his number retired. (2) The Giants want Eli to help groom the future QB in Jones.
The writing is on the wall. You can choose to see it or not. Daniel Jones will be the Giants starting QB next year.
We can take all the shots at Marc Ross that we want, but he is a legitimate football guy who knows much more than the average fan. Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe he was right when he said that Eli can't play at a high level anymore? BTW, Marc Ross was also the guy who correctly identified B.Mayfield as a stud QB. He got Mayfield right, maybe he got Eli right too.
