Stoney, Lots of fine defenses have been straddled with a poor offense and haven't quit. Some have even won superbowls and Ray Lewis's Ravens as well as The recent Bronco's edition prove the point. Charlie Conerly's pre-Lombardi offense was inept for years and and the defense only got stronger as they bailed them out. Andy Robestelli, the team capt., once recovered a fumble and instead of giving the ball to the ref handed it to Chucking Charlie, "here, see if you can hold them".
So you may be technically right, the defensive mess may have started with the inept offense, but good coaching and a sense of team almost certainly could have prevented it.
And I'm not sure I agree with the rap on JR even at this late date where he's a bullseye and every fan carries a cross bow.
We forget: Tim Cartier, Sinorce Moss, David Brown. Look what the Accorsi regime did trying to get us a running back with the no. 1 pick: Ron Dwyane, Jarrod Bunch, Tyronne Wheatley. Three fails and three wasted no. 1's. There wouldn't be enough throat gargle to soothe the windpipes of bloggers if this regime wasted three no.1's like that.
JR hasn't had a single bust in his no.1's and I think that's probably way above the league average.
His maligned no.3's are Mario Manningham, Chad Jones, Jay Bromley, OO, Will Beatty, D.Thompson, David Wells, Jerod Jenigan, Jay Alford, and Damontre Moore.
Take out Alford and Chad Jones who looked great until they were hurt. How bad really is that list when compared to the league average? What exactly is the average for productive player with the no. 3.
And, no matter how it turned out, I think D. Moore and OO are exactly the high reward / high risk pick you want to make in the third round. And you make them knowing the odds are against you. You can't tell me they didn't work out, you have to view the pick knowing the odds and the potential.
But a GM is about free agent signing and non signings too. He signs Rolle and Canty and takes a lot of heat for the prices paid, and we don't win a superbowl without them. Superb and right on the money.
Harris, Jenkins, Vernon, Robinson in one year and not a miss among them (the current coaching caused mess notwithstanding). Stoney that's extraordinary.
