My question is what changed since 1994 exactly ?
Maybe Ernie Accorsi changed the Giants thinking on this? It was Accorsi who used the 'veteran QB grooms the rookie QB for one year' model in 2004. The Giants decided to use that model again, this time with Eli as the veteran QB grooming the rookie. Whereas in 2004, it was Warner grooming the rookie QB in Eli.
In contrast, in 1994, perhaps the Giants didn't believe in that model (under G.Young)?
The 2004 model was definitely Accorsi's idea--I remember him talking about it back then when the Giants signed Warner to specifically help groom Eli. And, as we know, Gettleman was definitely influenced by Accorsi.
CTGiants brought up another good point about how the Giants must know that the 2020 draft is loaded with some high end QB prospects and yet the Giants decided to take Jones at 6 rather than wait another year and move on a rookie QB in 2020. They must really like Jones. They might even prefer Jones over the rookie QBs coming out in 2020. I sometimes wonder if the Giants were talking about Jones during the 2018 draft and decided they like Jones over the Darnold, Rosen, and Allen crowd. That would be very interesting to know.
I remember when the Giants passed on Darnold and Shurmur came out and said the Giants have a long term plan at QB but wouldn't say what that plan was. Maybe the plan was Jones?
Jones will forever be compared to Haskins, but as Giants fans we will also compare Jones to the Rosen, Darnold, and Allen crowd knowing that the Giants could have selected a QB in 2018 instead of 2019. Interestingly, we won't forever compare Jones to Mayfield for the obvious reason that Mayfield was off the board with the first pick. I guess we won't compare Jones to K.Murray either.
