But it sounds like the Colts didn't have an alternative to paying Luck the money. Luck may have given the Colts two options, (1) pay Luck the money and Luck will retire or (2) pay Luck the money and place Luck on the IR. In both cases, the Colts have no alternative but to pay Luck the money.
If Luck retired at the end of last year, this wouldn't have been an issue. The Colts would have saved the money on the cap, and Luck wouldn't have been paid. It is kind of curious that Luck waited until now to make his decision. Luck screwed his team, teammates, and the organization so that he could get his last paycheck.
Luck was healthy when last season ended. There was no reason he would consider retiring then, especially after completing his first 16 game season since 2014, and performing so well doing so (Comeback Player of the Year, making it to second round of the playoffs, and all). When he suffered the calf injury in the spring (during OTAs?) it was not believed to be very serious or long term. At least that’s my understanding.
It’s (this injury) become a long term issue, he still could not play this week— that was not what anyone in the organization believed would be the case a few weeks ago. The lingering injury, with the very real possibility of yet another long time rehab and more missed games, provoked Luck to re-evaluate his future in the NFL. Why is that so difficult to comprehend?
Any other player with the injury history Luck has suffered the last FIVE years, out of the 8 he’s been in the league, would have been overwhelmingly dismissed as “injury prone”, “too fragile”, “brittle” on this message board. But because Luck surprises everyone with his retirement announcement, he’s a dick because he put his team in an untenable position right before the season begins. Unbelievable.
