Are we trying to do too much? Does our personnel severely mismatch perhaps the one thing our HC knows best or is our Coach trying to do all the things at once instead of just trying to execute a handful of things well?
I think you can make a case for that on defense, at least based on some of the comments the players have made. On offense, I see a situation where the personnel doesn’t complement each other—the OL for example doesn’t match the quarterback. Also the running backs don’t have a true perimeter threat, so I would think we see a lot of instances where they jam a square peg into a round hole.
What is our signature go to play? Our offense seems to have no distinct characteristic.
The slant pass is one, but I don’t know if that’s the official signature play. I’d have to see if I can get those stats from my resources, so hold that question until the end of the year and I’ll try to get that data.
To what extent does the GM get involved with final cuts?
I’m not sure of the exact extent, but since the general manager puts the roster together, I’m sure he has a significant say in the construction of the 53-man roster and in the evaluation of the players. I know Reese usually holds an exit interview with all the players. I believe every NFL GM does that.
Had JR not signed JPP, how much heat do you think he would be getting.
Hard to say. I mean who’s to say that JPP wouldn’t have gone elsewhere and flourished? Lots of moving pieces here, but I think considering the Giants didn’t have an accomplished third defensive end to replace JPP, Reese made the right move to bring him back.
Do you think the rest of the season will continue to spiral downhill?
I hope not. This has been brutal. I wish I could give you a reason why things will be better, but I need to see it to believe it.
What are the challenges for a reporter covering a losing team? Does it matter whether fans had high expectations or low expectations for the team?
Win or lose, reporters still get paid to be objective. With that said, the biggest challenge is trying to get guys to come clean with you. You have to sometimes play the role of psychologist to do your job, which is tricky. From my perspective, when the team loses, my paper’s numbers suffer (and hence my revenue that goes to offset expenses related to covering the team). I’m right now at a point where I’m afraid to announce renewals for next year lest frustrated fans toss the flier into the trash can. It’s also not fun when you try to get answers to the questions your readers want to know and you run into brick walls, and it’s also not fun dealing with guys who are short or curt to you. But if you don’t have thick skin in this business, you’re not going to survive.
Is it a foregone conclusion that McAdoo will be fired? Do you think Reese is also in trouble?
Right now if I had to lay down money, I’d say Reese is in bigger trouble. As I’ve noted before, this team has changed two coordinators and the head coach and they still haven’t won a playoff game. That’s on the general manager. McAdoo isn’t safe, but I will be interested to see if his latest attempt to get through to every player works. If it doesn’t, then let’s just say I’m going to be working overtime in January and February chasing down rumors.
How is Darian Thompson's year seem to be going? From his personal and Coaching perspective? Do you think Orleans Darkwa might be able to be a regular RB for the Giants moving forward? Thanks again for letting us ask these questions of you.
Thompson started out slowly, but he’s definitely picked things up. I’m still not convinced he’s the long-term answer, but at least he’s carrying his weight. Regarding Darkwa, the days of the featured running back are rare. I don’t think Darkwa can be a feature back, but I do think he can be a part of the rotation moving forward IF he stays healthy.
Are the Giants allowing fans to buy season tickets or individual games without investing in a PSL?
I don’t think so. I do know that you can buy individual seats on Ticket Exchange, but I don’t know if the seats are the same every week.
