Yes, you have to have at least a good QB. We all know that. Everyone knows that. However, the way you build a good team hasn't changed at all over the years. You start by winning the line of scrimmage. If you have a good offensive line and a good defensive line, you will have the foundation for a very good team. Even if your receivers are average and your running backs are average, and your QB is just a decent starting NFL QB, you will be a pretty good offensive team with a good offensive line. Same goes on defense, if your defensive line is very strong, your defense will be solid even if the back 7 is average.
I have been told since I was a boy, by my father and my coaches, that you build a team at the line of scrimmage on outward. If you can consistently win the line of scrimmage, you have a chance to be a good team. If you regularly lose the line of scrimmage, you have no chance.
Gettleman came here known as a hog mollie guy. He believed in big men giving you a chance to win. He said it, he said it again, he said it over and over again. But, since coming here, he has ripped down the offensive line and defensive line. He's replaced everybody. And so far, the results are not very good. Two years in, the offensive line is a little better than it was before he arrived, but not a lot better. Both tackles are average (at best). The two guards are good, not great, not elite, but good. The center is average. So, that's three positions that need to be upgraded, even after all the free agent contracts and trades that Gettleman has made. Through two drafts, and with all those picks they had last year, Gettleman only drafted ONE offensive lineman high, and it was a guard with a second round pick. No OTs drafted. Not one. On the defensive line, he has drafted good young players, but they aren't great. Not yet. BJ Hill has surprisingly taken a step backwards and seems like a non-factor at this point. I'd say he's average. Tomlinson is a good player. Lawrence looks like he's going to be a good one. Not really much depth behind them.
Bottom line, Gettleman better spend this upcoming offseason improving the offensive line, and the linebackers who are awful.
