Well folks I certainly did not think we would be where we are after eight games. I'm sure we are not where John mara thought we were going to be either. The truth is our own management didn't have high aspirations for our first eight games; I was told repeatedly by insiders " lets just wait till we are 4-4 after eight games and we will re examine everything then.
There was a smugness, a sureness in there comments and a patronizing way they said it. Each time I came away feeling " these guys must know something I don't..." Looking back then on the Viking and Cardinal game, clearly those were two very winnable games and in order for us to reach that middling 4-4 those two games had to be wins. In my mind after those losses the wheels began turning and the probability of Shurmur being let go increased dramatically. The Cardinal loss after a long break particularly haunts the owner and irritates him. Shurmur's teams going down by two touchdowns every game, the fact that they haven't led for one moment in the past four games...
It's all adding up to a very un NY Giant moment. There are those that say constant change sets back franchise but it's really important obviously to get the right guy as coach. As I see it coach's come in two types: The brilliant new genius and the ' personality ' coach. The Cardinal coach is a good example of the New Genius mold he has tons of ideas and is not afraid to try them out and Chuckie with the Raiders would be the " personality ' coach a guy that gets by on his talk and rage and force off personality. Big parcels was a personality coach.
I believe that the NY Giants need a Personality coach. To stabilize the fan base and to corral the press and to install fear and confidence into our players. Bill Cowher would be a very fine choice. To bring back the values of old time football is a rout that Mara can sign on for. I don't see John going with a young new genius but someone to take all the cameras onto themselves a boisterous, loud and scary presence that would be very welcome at Giants stadium.
The Trick Play) The History of Darrell Bevell vs the Giants and the Giants lax preparation-- The real Story.
“As the week went, we talked about it and felt good enough about it where I thought we had a specific spot, specific time we wanted to take a shot,” Patricia said. “So we let it rip and it was great execution. It worked very well in practice and I’m just glad it worked in the game.”
The play came at a great time for the Lions and won them the game. Offensive coordinator for the Lions Darrel Bevell had a hankering for that play because he beat the Giants in the past with it! Two years ago when Bevell OC for the Seahawks. On that play, McKissic took a toss from Russell Wilson and threw the ball back to the quarterback, who hit Paul Richardson for an easy score.
The Giants did not learn from their mistakes. The Giants like to use analytics to figure out when to go for a two point conversion but don't dig out film of the OC from another team. Just studying the Lions was a mistake. Furthermore the Lions had used a flea flicker against the Green Bay this year that should of roused some alarms. it didn't.
Matt Patricia has a rule when it comes to trick plays. He needs to see it work in practice – the first time – before he allows it into that week’s gameplan.
So when the Detroit Lions hit on the Darrell Bevell Special in practice two weeks ago, a toss-sweep that turned into a flea flicker, Patricia was greeted with a chorus of cheers and players shouting, “First play.”--
Boy it sounds a lot more fun playing for Patricia than Shurmur. Remember Shurmur is the 'adult' and Patricia the 'child ' in Gettelman's view... well the child just one-upped the adult and what we are left with is this sad sack, shoulder hunched, defeated image of a football coach. a guy who doesn't shoot straight, doesn't tell it like it is and doesn't motivate anyone at all.~stoney
