Here are the answers to this week's questions.
With the report coming out that Eli Apple almost left the team because of criticism directed at him by coaches and teammates, is his attitude a problem or is it something else? I know his mother Annie Apple just had brain surgery (prayers her recovery is going well!), so maybe that is weighing on his mind? If it is an attitude problem, would they trade him in the offseason and what could they get for him in return?
First thing’s first: I don’t see the Giants trading Eli Apple after two seasons. He’s not only a draft pick, he’s an affordable option at a cornerback spot that’s likely to undergo a makeover. As for Apple’s struggles, I believe part of it has to do with coaching and not seeing eye to eye with what might be asked of him. So I guess to an extent you can call it an attitude problem, but this situation reminds me a lot of Corey Webster, who languished under Tim Lewis. I think if there is a new coach, Apple might just bounce back in 2018.
Hi Pat. Do you think the Giants can win any of these last 5 games? That's about all I've got considering the M.A.S.H. unit we have remaining of an active roster at this point.
I honestly don’t know. I’m not thrilled with what they’ve done at quarterback and the offensive scares the Jezeebus out of me. I usually try to look at the glass as half full, but I’m having a tough time doing so for what’s left of this season.
Do you see a lack of emotional maturity pattern here?
When the top picks lack emotional maturity is it any wonder the foundation of this team is a mess? Please name which one of those Top picks demonstrates or demonstrated leadership or has any signs of future leadership.
2011 #1 Draft Pick Prince Amukamara - Carl Banks says he's sensitive and needs to grow up
2012 #1 Draft Pick David Wilson - misses a block and is crying on the sidelines
2013 #3 Draft Pick Damontre Moore - no signs of emotional maturity
2014 #1 Draft Pick Odell Beckham - the emotional maturity is supposedly still a process with no end
2015 #1 Draft Pick Ereck Flowers - very quiet and according to Banks needs to grow up. More maturity?
2015 #3 Draft Pick Odighizuwa - emotionally, what happened here?
2016 #1 Draft Pick Eli Apple - looks to quit after ridicule. Banks claims he needs to grow up
That’s not a very good record, is it? I think you also have to remember that most of those picks were juniors when they were drafted. I’m not making an excuse here as heave knows I haven’t been thrilled with some of those pocks, but that does need to be factored into the equation.
Is it time for the Giants to switch to the 3-4 or a hybrid? Seems like the risks they take trying to make olbs into d-ends never works and just makes a quicker transition and impact for rookies in the 3-4
If you are going to make that switch full time, you need LINEBACKERS to do it. This team has maybe one linebacker right ow—Goodson, and he needs to quell concerns about his durability. So no, I don’t think a transition to a 3-4 is on the horizon. Now if a new coaching staff comes in that favors that look, maybe, but again, right now they don’t have the personnel to do it. P.S. They have run some hybrid 3-4 looks this year, but remain a 4-3 front.
At what point do you think we will see Webb play?
I don’t think it will be this weekend vs. Oakland. MAYBE we see him next week against Dallas. It really depends on when the coaching staff decides to increase his workload with the offense.
The Giants owners have some very tough decisions to make in the upcoming year in terms of a new GM and head coach. Assuming this happens and there is also a total new team behind those 2 changes (Marc Ross gone, coaching staff, Spagnuolo etc..) what are the top 3 things you think a new GM and coach need to take care of to make this team competitive? And within the means of our cap situation and players or lack thereof? OL Rebuild? QB situation? Draft?
Let’s start with a general manager first. 1) Pick the right head coach. Personally, I go for someone who has experience, especially if I think Eli Manning is my quarterback last year. 2) Clean out the scouting department. They won’t do that until after the draft simply because to do that now would be irresponsible and not practical. 3) Get a clear vision with the head coach as to how they want this football team to look. I’ve often said that I didn’t think the head coach and general manager were on the same page and that goes back to the days when Coughlin was here. That needs to stop.
For the head coach: 1) Decide the direction at quarterback. If it’s Eli, sit with him and figure out what he needs but ALSO keep an eye on the future—if Webb is your future, see if what Eli needs can also apply to Webb. 2) Get the right assistant coaches in here. No cutting corners here and please make sure that the coaches are hired on merit rather than other factors. 3) Work with the general manager. Sounds obvious, but sometimes egos get in the way.
Were you able to be a part of the locker room during the Eli interview? How difficult was that for you personally to be a part of?
Watching Ei Manning near tears just ripped my heart out. As a reporter, we’re supposed to be objective, but at the end of the day, I’m a persona and Eli Manning is a person. Unless new evidence is brought to the light, I will always believe that Eli deserved a lot better than he was handed.
What role did ownership have in this classless decision to bench Eli Manning for Geno Smith?
I believe this question might have been submitted before John Mara spoke, so I would refer you to his transcript as he explained his role.
