Gettleman made a huge mistake in 2018 in thinking this team could compete and, in turn, wasted the second pick of the draft on S.Barkley. The Giants should have traded down and drafted Q.Nelson, a physical player, preferable to the cute spins and dance moves by a finesse player in Barkley. Barkley is so finesse that he isn't willing to stand in there against the blitz and protect his QB. What a ripoff.
But Gettleman's moves in 2019 were more focused on the long term health of the organization. The Giants started to rebuild in 2019--and we are only witnessing the first year of that rebuild. Gettleman comes back next year. I like his 2019 draft. He made a mistake in 2018 but he quickly reversed course in 2019. I would like to see the Giants trade Engram in the offseason and look for a traditional TE, a big physical blocker, and develop a power running game. It is hard to develop that kind of running game with a WR at TE.
Shurmur doesn't come back. (1) I don't like how he doesn't make any changes--give the playcalling to someone else, for example. (2) Too many mistakes in pass blocking--Shurmur can't seem to get that cleaned up. I'm not sure if the OL is as bad as they appear to be or if the coaching sucks. (3) The Giants have fallen so far that they need to hire a proven head coach in Mike McCarthy. At the very least, McCarthy will come in and stablize things and get the Giants back to respectablity. The argument that Shurmur hasn't had the best talent around him is a reasonable one to make. However, Shurmur has no track record of success and so who knows how he will do when the talent improves around him. In the meantime, we know that a guy like McCarthy can win in the NFL, has a proven track record of success, and is available.
Obviously, with a new head coach comes a new staff--the defensive coordinator is gone. I trust McCarthy to put together a much better staff than Shurmur.
