General Manager Evaluation for any squad:
(1) The Coaching Staff they hire and how they interact. On this front, swing and a miss by DG. Shurmur was not the answer and the supporting Coaching staff was not good either.
(2) Draft Management. On this front, I would rate DG as above average. He's drafted multiple players that in 2 years have made contributions. Some are still a work in progress, but there is generally more to work with here by comparison to JR that pretty much hit on his 1st round picks and swung and missed on everybody else. Whether or not you believe we could have picked up Jones later in the first round or think that Saquon's pick could have netted us 5 additional picks. That's truly speculation and we have no idea what actual offers were out there.
(3) Offseason Roster management. Neutral to slightly negative. I think some of the trades DG has pulled off have been good, with the exception of the Leonard Williams trade......which could end up being a wash if we get a compensatory pick down the road. The JPP trade was terrific and I support the OBJ trade. We got picks and 2 guys that were starters at positions of need. Getting a 3rd rounder for Eli Apple (steal).
On the Free Agency front, it's largely been poor. The best FAs have been the WR filler guys (Latimer, Fowler, R Shepard when healthy, Mayo is a decent roster depth guy.). Solder has not been good, but the Giants had to do something at LT given what a mess Flowers was. The pickings weren't great at that position. Plus, the Giants had minimal cap space to operate with during that specific offseason and multiple holes to fill.
(4) INtra-Season Roster management. DG hasn't let some of his signings go to his head. He let Omameh go after he was a disaster. He's not been afraid to turn over some of the dead wood on the roster. He's found people here and there (last year the OG Brown off the Rams and this year Kaden Smith). Not outstanding stuff, but not bad either.
(5) General messaging to the fanbase. Not good. But this is really something that is more style points and being great at the other 4 points overcomes being a d-bag.
I can deal with 2 more seasons of Gettleman. I don't see any way this guy is going to be around much beyond 5 years. I don't think he has a ton of rope, either. He's going to get another chance with the Coaching staff and another offseason to upgrade the personnel. I don't think we'll be saddled with multiple horrible players. It's good to hear that we're open to College coaching options. I'll take my chances with Ruhle even though it makes me a little nervous. I think the Kris Richard interview is interesting.......we could use some attitude on defense.
I think it's absolutely fair to criticize Gettleman. I think he's an upgrade from JR. I think there are possible upgrades from Gettleman.......but I don't think we'll go to hell in a handbasket with him.
HUMILITY is the right word for what is and was needed but its not in his DNA. he should get some coaching from Eli
I am interested to see how the coaching interviews go and who we come out with in this process. I sensed from what Mara said and some of the noise around it afterwards that DG will not be a blocker to a coach coming here if things need to change.
What that means internally to the Giants...who knows. Does the coach have the final Y/N on a player in the draft and FA? other areas?
Dave Diehl gave a very biased KUDOs on Sirius NFL to DG as a OL and DL talent evaluator. He was the guy who graded out Diehl for the Giants to pick him and said he is very good with his evaluations around the trenches. Now....maybe if we can get him to focus on the OL trenches we can see what he can do with the four computer guys they hired
