The team spends a ton on FA's, goes 11-5 and makes the playoffs. Who predicted 3-13 would follow ? The Giants lose 2 of the first 5 enroute to 0-5 on last second scores after Eli leads what should have been game ending winning drives. Then came the injuries where they were signing WRs off the street and 3-13 is the end result.
While no one was saying the Giants were a SB contender most people were looking at 3-13 as an aberration and the following season would be an improvement. Not saying another 11-5 season but somewhere around 8-8, 9-7. Looking back now he was wrong and he admitted it.
No GM is infallible and no GM works independently making all the decisions without running them by staff, coaches and owners. The entire front office miscalculated. He may have recognized the error sooner than others which is why he started getting rid of players. Criticize him for only getting a 5 for Snacks, what he got for Apple etc. but who knows what other teams were offering. The point is he adjusted.
People want to criticize keeping Eli but again coming off 5-11 they weren't turning the team over to Jones on Day 1 and again not just his decision.
He has recognized mistakes and corrected them. He will make mistakes going forward but the NFL is loaded with decision makers who have failed and more than DG. If not we wouldn't have a Black Monday.
I wish we had a GM who was infallible, whose every decision turned out to be the Midas touch but we don't.
The jury is still out. Not that he gets a mulligan but there's a new coach to be named, another draft and round of FA coming. He sounded humble, admitted to mistakes and open to accepting new ideas and philosophies. You have a choice, continue to live in the past, blame, point out the error of his ways etc. or hope he's learning, progressing and bettering the team. Will he ever be 100% of what some of you expect, no, but as long as the team is trending upward its a good thing.
