I finally finished the press conference (I commented earlier like 10 minutes into it).
I don't think the Giants could have hired a more well rounded, prepared, and professional coach. I've mentioned yesterday that the hires that are really going to matter are the offensive and defensive coordinators for play calling. I've always been a firm believer that a good coach is a teacher first. I say this as a coach myself. He nailed that press conference. The most impressive I've ever seen. He answered every question. He didn't dance around them at all.
He's sounding like one of the good ones. The sort of coach when someday he leaves the Giants (they don't last forever) you have respect for what he represented and how he represented the organization. I know a good coach when I hear one and there's no doubt he will be a good one. Teach, discipline, be respected, get results. He's got the demeanor and attitude of a true leader. I'm a believer now!
He has me pumped for 2020. Good hire Giants!
I also liked his honesty of not knowing everything. That he said he won't be calling plays, that he will hire guys to fill those roles. His job is to prepare his team. To teach concepts, minimize mistakes, and put the best product on the field on Sunday. That limits his scope in a positive way. A lot of Belichick coaches have not succeeded at the NFL level but they were part of the X's and O's. He's coming from a different path, where his focus is on preparation, execution, and teaching. I think that background in teaching that he has is very unique and beneficial. He was going for his PhD in education and you can hear the teacher aspect in him when he speaks, and how he answers questions. He gives concise answers with specific details. He's going to have to learn to limit his speaking after press conferences going forward (you don't want to share too much info) and that might be hard as a first time coach, with a teaching background. He will want to teach others why he did something the way he did, but he's going to have to bite his tongue at times. Heck, Bill Belichick is the master of one word answers. lol, but in all seriousness. He has the attributes of an intellectual teacher who understands the concepts of building a team around the core principles of preparedness and discipline. Limit penalties, know your role, your playbook, and put players in the best place to succeed.
