It's become apparent to me that the 2020 crop of Center prospects is pretty deep this year.
This is good for the Giants as I see OC as a position of need. Spencer Pulley and Jon Halapio are both backup quality Centers IMO. Halapio is not under contract next year and with his injury he may not even be signed by anyone let alone be a starter for the Giants in 2020. Going into 2020 with Spencer Pulley as our starting Center is bad idea. Giants need to maximize and support Barkley and Jones with a decent supporting cast.
I see two top tier prospects. These guys will both be off the board by the end of round two. These guys would be day 1 starters for the Giants and would require the Giants #36 pick (If theyre even available). I know, I know, drafting a Center isn't a sexy pick but I think if you want a top notch offensive line you need a top notch Center. I'd like to see the Giants and new O-Line coach Columbo take on more of a Zone blocking scheme to really open up some gaps for those big Barkley runs. That being said I wouldn't be upset with either of these two.
Tyler Biadasz - Wisconsin Might be the best OC prospect since Travis Frederick all around blocker in both the passing and running game.
Loyd Cushenberry - LSU is an extremely stout in pass protection and jumped out to me in the 3 LSU games I watched this year when I noticed him often far down field making great blocks. A centers job doesn't stop at the LOS and the best centers in the game make these downfield blocks and blocks when pulling to the sides in the running game. Cush has also impressed recently in senior bowl practices
I like 3 "Second tier" prospects. Guys available in round 3-5. These guys would probably be eventual starters
The 3 H's
Jake Hanson - Oregon - Polished lineman. He's the only guy in this group that I would see as an immediate starter
Nick Harris - Washington - Undersized but athletic, would be good in a zone blocking scheme
Matt Hennesy - Temple - High ceiling but struggled with a concussion this year
And
Ceasar Ruiz - Michigan - Well rounded center, has an extremely high pass blocking grade from PFF
