Free agency is dangerous territory. We have seen late 90s redskins, Eagles several years ago, Giants 4 years ago and multiple other teams over several years spend and get zero if not negative results from free agent spending. The Giants have top tier cap available and it’s exciting but buyer beware.
Free agency is A+ money given to B or C talent. What usually happens is mega contracts are handed out. Let’s say Jones CB as an example gets a 15 million a year contract from us. Can you imagine what will happen if he gives up a touchdown and 5 catches for 100 yards week 1? How is posters will attack him? The media? Next thing you know. Why did we give him this contract. Cut him,!,! Trade him!!!! Same goes to Clowney or any of those players. It happens every year. Yet! We still want to sign these guys.
I’m not saying don’t sign them. I just saying buyer beware. Personally my targets would be tier 2 level guys. Like
CB Harris
LB Van Noy
S McCourtey
Players like that come to mind. I bet you anything if the Giants spent on Van Noy and Clowney and both landed here. Van Noys numbers will be almost as good as Clowneys. Let’s say Clowney finishes with 12 sacks, 20 pressures and 60 tackle. But is paid 22 million a year. Van Noy gets 8 sacks, 16 pressures and 50 tackles and gets 12 million a year. It’s no contest. Van Noys signing was better right ?! Is 10 million a year worth 4 more sacks, 10 tackles and 4 more pressure? Just an example. Harris is still playing at a high level. Has been healthy and is what low 30s. He will cost 2-3 million a year less and 10-15 million total in guaranteed money less simply because of age.
If I was the Giants. Get a few skill positions signed like Harris at Corner and maybe a guy like Van Noy and McCourtey under contract. Now your signing a B- player for B money. That good business or a good contract. Hit on a few more draft picks. We are there. Now the ship isn’t sinking. It’s floating.
This isn’t a1 year turn around guys. It’s not.
How about this. I no I will get heat for this. What if Barkley was traded for let’s say for a 1st and 2nd round pick. Would you trade him? I would. This is why. Let’s first say Jets picking 11
At 4 Giants go Wirfs OT
11 Patrick Queen LB
Round 2 4th pick Taylor RB
Round 2 pick 11 CB Terrell from Clemson
With 4 picks in 2 rounds will this team benifit more then having Barkley. And still have a productive runner behind center? Just saying. It’s a team sport
