I live in Atlanta and I get to watch alot of NFC South games when the Giants arent playing. Over the years I've had a chance to watch Barber run against some tough defenses from the Panthers, Falcons and Saints and he never looked like the competition was too big for him. He runs hard and is surprisingly strong for a back his size. Very high motor and looks for contact. He can also catch out of the backfield and pass block at a decent level.
I'm not saying he's anything special but I will say he is a solid football player. I would feel 100% comfortable with him starting 2-5 games per year if Saquon was injured. Barber would instantly become our RB2, and the 2nd best RB we've had on this team since Bradshaw.
I would just draft a back. Cheaper and longer. Fresh legs. There will be a handful available rounds 5-7 like Kelley, Anderson, Taylor etc
I would absolutely draft a back as well... but, you have to factor in the possibility of that back being an absolute bust at the NFL level. Hence, you sign a "sure thing" and hope you draft a guy that can make your backfield a 3-headed monster during the season.

For reference the Patriots have drafted 5 RBs over the last 10 years to compensate for potential bad FAs signings, and at the same time signing FA RBs in the same years to compensate for bad RB draft picks. That's how you build a solid team in the long run.

rodney27: You're right about the fumbling problem, tl65taog. I just don't think it can be fixed. He had in preseason, has it at a record pace now, and had the same problem at Duke. If he hasn't fixed it in all that time...I just don't know if he can.

tl65taog: yes the fumbling problem has to be fixed, but you have to be fair about it
