What?
Gettleman's Free Agent Strategy is Very Smart???
Yup.
I know a lot of fans are probably a little underwhelmed with a Free Agent take so far, disappointed that we didn't land a really big name like Clowney (yet). However, If you look a little deeper into the way his new Free Agent deals are structured it's VERY SMART:
Hear me out. The Giants are obviously a rebuilding team, they will still be a rebuilding team this year and at least next year. Teams that have a legit shot at the Super Bowl are the kind of teams that should overpay for the top notch FA's like Clowney. Not teams in rebuild mode.
Gettleman structured these deals using Roster Bonuses instead of Signing Bonuses (Smart). Signing Bonuses get amortized throughout the players contract, Gettleman gave them Roster Bonuses instead in 2020. This strategy allows the Giants to continue to rebuild for the next two years. Bad Free Agent contracts are usually the kind that increase year to year while the players abilities generally deteriorate and teams end up with overpaid players that require dead cap to cut. Gettleman's signings are the opposite.
Examples:
James Bradberry- Bradberry was given a $12Mil Roster bonus in 2020, His 2020 cap hit is $16Mil. In 2021 his Cap hit decreases to $14Mil creating $2Mil in cap space next year. In 2022 his cap hit is again $14Mil but the Giants can cut him WITH NO DEAD CAP if he under performs creating $14Mil in cap space.
Blake Martinez- Martinez was given a $10Mil Roster Bonus in 2020, His 2020 cap hit is $14Mil. In 2021 his Cap hit decreases to $8.2Mil creating $6Mil in cap space next year. In 2022 his Cap hit is again $8.5Mil but the Giants can cut him WITH NO DEAD CAP if he under performs creating $8.5 in cap space.
Levine Toilolo- Toilolo was given a $2Mil Roster Bonus in 2020, in 2021 he has no guaranteed money. He can be cut with NO DEAD CAP if he under performs.
Fackrell, McCoy and Flemming are all on 1 year deals.
I don't think Gettlman gave out a single Signing Bonus. This paves the way for the Giants to continue to grow and not be stuck in bad guaranteed contracts the create mountains of Dead Money like we've had for as long as I can remember.
