I think clowney is mainly an edge player (defensive end) and leonard williams is mainly a DL(defensive tackle) player. LW is 300+ pounds. clowney is 267 lbs. There is a dedicated % of the cap for every position. These two players play different positions.
Seems to me that the article makes no sense. The plan is to get and edge rusher, not delete a DL guy who then needs to be replaced.
Ideally, you put both of them on the field at the same time, putting OL guys in a bind on how to block both of them. IF they double team both guys, then your other players easily get the sacks and TFL etc. If the offense does not double team one of them, then that guy gets a 1 on 1 opportunity. More 1 on 1 opportunities leads to better stats for that player over a season.
If they keep a TE to help block, it's one less guy for you second and third level players to cover. Stats are nice, but it is a team game. Both payers command lots of double teams. That is what you want. Multiple players that command double teams. The NYG practically invented that. I think they are trying to get back to that kind of NYG football.
Am I crazy, or was the article not very well thought out and demonstrates a lack of football knowledge?
I could see the logic of ponying up a big number on a 1 year deal for clowney. Why? next year when he signs a big FAcontract with another team we get a 3rd round comp pick in 2021. Maybe you could use that comp. pick as part of package to move up in round 1 and get an edge rusher in the 2021 nfl draft. Thinking ahead never hut anybody.. comp picks for 1 year deal players is right our of the Patriots playbook.
