Ok fellow fans. First and foremost! Please be safe and do your part in this difficult time.
Now back to football. Judge obviously has a vision and Gettleman listened loud and clear. After seeing the direction the Giants made in there own offseason moves and free agency it’s obvious this team is building for the long haul. Williams tag was necessary but I feel a long term contract is needed. The Giants need some additional cap relief after free agency and his tag and a long term contract can free up a few million and put everyone’s mind at ease on that situation and putting to bed a possible hold out. Golden is in limbo. There isn’t much of a market right now for high tier free agents seeking big paydays. As the days pass the price tag goes down. Golden May return or the Giants May just move forward with what they have.
It’s pretty clear the Giants don’t expect a big turn around this year. Why do I say that. Let’s look at how the Giants dishes out there money and who they signed. These contracts are opposite of how NFL teams operate. NFL teams usually sign big contracts and back load the money and give out signing bonuses and pro rate the bonus over the entire contract giving the team cap relief years 1 and 2 of the contract with a win now mentality. These contracts are front loaded and the bonuses are roster bonuses. So that money hits this year and appears the Giants spent more then they did. What this does is gives the Giants significant cap relief the next 2 years of there contracts helping this team build over the next few years. Roster bonuses hit 100% now and there is no prorated money over the remainder of the contract.
What that tells me is Judge has convinced Mara and a Gettleman that this is a marathon not a race. Let’s improve this team one player at a time and continue to teach and groom the young roster we have. If the right free agents fall to then next year and the right rookies are available draft accordingly.
Bradberry adds a CB that’s in his prime and has a lot of football ahead of him. Long, fast and smart. Clean kid and always fallowed 1 receivers week after week and still posting pretty good numbers. That’s what impressed me. Look who he covered 2 times a year. Jones, Evans, Thomas. All 3 of those guys are in the Top 5 in the league conversations. Who was Jones forced to cover in the NFC East. Tate? McClauren? Jeffery? Really? None are a legit prime player or a threat. Harris from Denver sane thing. Maybe Hill. Other then that not really a legit WR. Allen maybe. Bradberry fallows some of the leagues top receivers not once but twice a year!! Covering receivers in the NFC East will be a walk in the park for him.
Martinez is a player I think doesn’t get the credit he should. And I bet you anything the Packers defense takes a step back unless they draft Queen, Murray, or one of the top ILB in this draft. There is a lotof chatter about he sucks in coverage and his tackles were junk tackles far off the line of scrimmage. Let me refresh some of your memories. Remember Jessie Armstead?!?! He racked up a ton of tackles on a bad football team. How is he remembered by us? Another thing. I can’t think of any linebackers in this league that can cover these Backs and TEs well. None of them can cover these quality players long. None. So let’s not fill ourselves in thinking Littleton can. He has a different situation with the Rams. You have a much better front that forces teams to get the ball out quicker. Donald, su, Flowers all got enough pressure to speed things up and that makes everyone in coverage look better. Plan and simple tackles are tackles. Getting 144 tackles 2 years in a row is not a junk stat. It’s being in the right place at the right time, taking right angles and actually getting the player to the ground. Another thing Martinez has he didn’t in Green Bay is Lawrence, Williams and Tomlinson I’m front of him. I have a feeling you guys will end up loving him.
Fackrell is a guy where I’m hoping is lightning in a bottle. He has the skill set to be a very good edge rusher. Hopefully Graham and the players around him allow him to be the guy they signed him to be
The other signings are those hidden guys that play a big roll that never makes the highlight reel or stat sheets. Blocking especially in the green and red zone is key and so is special teams.
As far as the draft goes. I do think the Giants will focus on the offense early. Especially in the trenches adding OT, C and maybe RB early. Corner and saftey along with pass rusher will be added as well at some point in this draft. I’m trying to keep calm but I’m begging to think Washington will take QB and Detroit will trade out of 3 for a QB needing team and Young may be there at 4. I wouldn’t be surprised at all. If not trading back may be in the cards. If not Wirfs or Becton maybe a Giant. I’m ok with that too
Curious of your thoughts
