Nico how can you say hope is a poor plan ? If the Bengals draft Burrows aren't the hoping the game he brings is how he performed last year as opposed to the prior year ? If the Skins draft Chase Young aren't they hoping his performance falling off toward the end of the year was maybe a case of getting to the end of his college career ? Whoever drafts Tua aren't they hoping the doctor's are right and his hip has healed and his game translates to the NFL ?
So how does hoping DeAndre Baker needed some time to adjust to the NFL game and any documented improvement we saw at the end of the year wasn't a sign of developing skills to an NFL CB ? How hoping Dexter Lawrence who displayed some pass rush skills continue to develop differ ?
You take the info in front of you and make an educated pick hoping you are correct because nothing is guaranteed.
No one is saying hope is the foundation of a plan but it is part of the equation.
He would also say that a GM and a head coach have to be honest with themselves and realize when a player they drafted or acquired isn't panning out. And to replace him instead of hoping that they will become something that they are not.
As fans it's different. We can hope things work out. But as a GM and head coach, if you rely on just hoping that things will work out, then you'll be looking for work sooner than later.
So far, I have a difficult time understanding what Gettleman's plan is and the results have been, well, disappointing to say the least. His idea that the Giants could win while rebuilding, I thought, was stupid and based mostly on hope and really bad decision making. He thought the talent was better and he should've concentrated on rebuilding from day one.
Instead he wasted resources on players who produced little to nothing. The worst example of this was the Leonard Williams deal which made no sense at all and cost the team a premium pick and $16M this season because he needed to save face.
Personally, I thought Mara made a mistake not firing him along with the god awful Pat Shrumur and if the team doesn't win at least seven games this season, he will probably be gone and the Giants will be looking for a new GM who will have to accept Judge as his head coach. Not many established GMs would do that. And I can't blame them. If I am a new GM, then I want to hire my people and not inherent the people left behind.
But I digress.
Gettleman hoped that Erick Flowers, a bust at LT, would work at RT with no Plan B. He hoped that Jonathan Stewart, a running back with a ton of miles on him would still be productive. He hoped that role players from the Cardinals would be productive in Bettcher's system in New York. He hoped that signing a bunch of free agent WRs would pan out. He hoped that Eli could still be a productive player and paid him over $20M for four games.
He hoped that Dexter Lawrence would be a consistent pass rusher. He hoped the same for Lorenzo Carter. He hoped that Bethea could still be a productive safety. He hoped that Leonard Williams would provide a pass rush.
See a pattern here?
Now he hopes that Fackrell will be the player he was two years ago and he hopes that he can draft a pass rusher in the draft. And he hopes that he can finally fix the OL. A thing he promised to be a priority during his first press conference. And we are still waiting.
