I’m not saying I don’t like Simmons but isn’t there a better way? Just brain storming? Would you spend a 4th overall pick on a linebacker that may be suspect vs the run but can cover? Don’t players like that usually go day 3? Wouldn’t you rather have a linebacker that can play the run and have enough speed to play all 3 downs that is ok in coverage? Playing the run in 50% of his job?
I can’t remember who wrote the article but it was right when the Giants signed Graham as our Defensive coordinator. But Graham sometimes in his past played 3 Down lineman, 3 linebackers and 3 safties with 2 corners. One of those safties played the TE. And he has that because Love and Peppers both play that spot. All they need is a FS that has enough range to play center field and is good in coverage. With this years saftey prospects in McKennie, Delpit, Davis, Winfield and Dugger. It would be easier to fill that roll that way vs a linebacker high just so he can cover.
I would be thrilled with Simmons at 4. I just think it would make more sense taking OT at 4 and FS in round 2. Can accomplish the sane thing plus get a better prospect at tackle this way. Linebackers like Wilson, Gay, Harris, that maybe there rounds 3 and 4 have the same skill set but run in the 4.45-4.48 range vs 4.39. I think a ton of people fell in love with Simmons simply because that 4.39 time at the combine.
If Simmons ran alerts say 4.49! Nothing else changed. Just that. Would everyone be so high on him. Same thing with Ross and Colman. Jumped up the draft boards because of there 40. Simmons tape shows he may struggle vs the run at this level. Heck. He struggled vs college level. One of the reasons why he was a chess piece and played snaps all over the defense. They needed to find ways to free him up to make plays. In the NFL. That’s a lot harder then college. And one last thing. The 40 is pretty overrated. Players like Brown, Beckham, Bolden and company didn’t have great 40 times. Yet no one could catch them. Odell ran like a 4.43 or something. Brown was 4.5. I think Bolden 4.6 or maybe 4.7. Barkley 40 time was faster then Odell’s. Yet Barkley has been caught from behind a few times. Odell and brown I have never seen caught from behind. I could be wrong. But these players are coached to run the 40. Stance, get off, etc. on the field with pads on. It’s game speed that makes the difference between a 25 yard play and a TD.
I actually like Murray, Queen, Baun and Gay better overall then Simmons as a every down player strictly at linebacker
Simmons if he develops into a solid run stopper and can get through traffic in between the tackles at this level and can set the edge. He will be what everyone is talking about. He is just a little finess for me in the run game.
