The first NFL player has come down with Covid--19, an ominous sign for the football season. In addition, the Mayor of L.A. said that no major sporting event (or music concert) should take place in the city for the rest of the year. Obviously, the Dodgers play in L.A., along with the Rams and Chargers.
I'm thinking that things will not get back to normal until a vaccine is discovered and distributed. Several vaccines are entering the trial phase and will move through that phase rather quickly. I don't have the link, but Johnson & Johnson believes they will have a vaccine ready to go by early 2021. IMO, the NFL should start training camps in December, start an abbreviated season in January 2021 (8 games?) with the playoffs taking place in March. Assuming a vaccine is available in early 2021, that timeline would work. Does this sound like a reasonable plan? I would be curious to know what others think.
I've heard rumors that College Football is thinking of delaying their season and would start sometime in the early spring semester rather than the fall. It is possible that online instruction will continue in the fall.
As far as MLB goes, I think they must and will cancel their season. What will happen if several MLB players come down with Covid--19 while they are playing baseball in Arizona (the proposed plan)? Also, the testing situation is rather tricky. A common citizen with a 102 fever can't get tested for Covid--19 and so how can MLB test its players every week to keep the disease from spreading from player to player? I don't see our society tolerating that kind of access when we don't have enough tests for the general population.
The good news: once we get a vaccine, life goes back to normal.
