Yet the O line was statistically twice as good in pass protection and run blocking in 2017, the year before Gettledumb tried to “fix it”. In 2016 and 2015 the Giants O line was statistically also much better than anything Gettleman has put together.
So how exactly did he not have an O line to work with and how did he make it twice as bad as it was than the year before he took over.
I dont disagree that Omameh was a poor choice in hindsight, but the cap hit was minimal. SOlder may have been really bad last year, but going into that offseason, he was CLEARLY the best tackle available and he got overpaid for it (plus the fact we CLEARLY needed an upgrade there). Played decently his first year and completely faceplanted last year. We also took Hernandez in the draft that year and while the jury is still out on him, he clearly has talent that the new coaching staff can work with. DG also traded for the #6 rated rated and top pass blocking guard in the league in Zeitler...again who underperformed.
I see a pattern with all 3 of them, they all regressed last year....was it poor coaching? Who knows. That is something we may be able to find out this year, with coaching that on paper appears to be better able to utilize the talent we have. I for one cannot wait to see how the season unfolds on offense, I have blind faith (hopefully calliesdad defines it for the 6th time for us) we may see a very productive one.
Last years poor oline play was a combination of everything that could go wrong expect for maybe some major injuries to the oline. Its hard to say for sure who should get the most blame, obviously oline players should take their fair share. But then add in coaching-shurmur in way over his head as a head coach and a poor ocoordintor, a rookie qb who held onto the ball too long, and a rb who allows several sacks. You can probably add in jones not reading the defense well enough (he was a rookie so not trying to knock him down) but reading nfl defenses is im sure an art form that takes time.
I think the giants addressed a lot of these issues in the off season, with bringing in garrett and Columbo, jomes by default not being a rookie, adding talent to the oline, and hopefully a healthy barkley who has worked on his blocking.
