Laz what would you have done differently with the Barkley pick ? I get that Nelson was out there but would you have really taken him with the 2nd pick ?
We've never heard of any trades that were available for DG for the pick. To get the #2 pick someone would have to overwhelm the Giants. The Browns took Mayfield. Unless the Giants took Darnold at 2 you knew the Jets were taking him at 3, then the Browns were up again at 4. What would have enticed the Browns to possibly trade out of 4 to get to 2 ? What could any other team have offered the Giants as a viable package for 2 ?
I find it hard to believe if another team put a viable offer out there we wouldn't have heard of it.
So even if he admitted it was time for a rebuild what would he have changed.
The OBJ trade. Again hindsight. What would have happened if he wasn't traded. He's a cancer who hasn't been the same since the injury. People were questioning if he lost a step his last year with the Giants, was he a little skiddish ? Sure you can say he needed more time to recover like most injuries but would he have seen it that way from a contract perspective ? He's an extraordinary athlete so no one is saying he might not have flashes of his old self but it sure looks like the OBJ of 100 catches, 1300 yards and 12 TDs is long gone.
You want to poke at it and say the biggest negative was the dead cap hit that's fair, but what would have happened if you didn't give him the cash ? Would he have held out, would he have become more disruptive, he threw Eli under the bus and has shown he can't get along with Mayfield, what would he have done with Jones ?
DG was handed a mess in so many ways. He's both added to the mess and may have corrected part of the mess. Some moves like Stewart were head scratchers but after Norwell signed elsewhere he needed a plan B to upgrade the OL which became Solder. No one was expecting Solder to become Jonathan Ogden but they were expecting a solid LT.
This past FA and draft picks appear to be solid. Jones is a big question mark so again mixed results.
We have to give him through the end of the season to fairly evaluate his tenure. It could be that he started out poorly, made the necessary adjustments and is getting better.
At this moment in time I'm siding more with he's got to go, but still am open minded. A lot of the open mindedness is based on what happens if he's replaced. Is that a set back ?
Guess we'll know in a couple of months.
