While I agree articles and people's ratings on paper don't mean squat, it's the product you put on the field that counts. It's also what you had to work with, what dead weight had to be replaced and where you were drafting.
DG took over a team that won 3 games in 2017. Was he that far off thinking the team could win, not a SB but win, considering 3 games were lost in the last minute 2 by long fgs and they had a decimated WR corps and a coach who was clueless ? If you remember the 0-5 start could have easily been 2-3 or 3-2 if the defense could have held leads Eli gave them and any potential game winning drive was snuffed out by a fumbled punt. The only point being is the team wasn't getting blown out and not competitive.
He tweaks and makes adjustments on the fly, even getting rid of some of his mistakes.
He's turned over the roster and has more than a handful of prospects who may or may not pan out but he's building a team that will hopefully compete for years. This is his 3rd year with players he drafted. If he's given us a generational RB and back-ups who allow the offense to control the game, if he's given us the next franchise QB, if he's just provided us with an OL that will be together for the next 10 years as well as a DL and some LBs and DBs that are serviceable the team is on it's way. If not he's outta here.
But to dissect every move and use that to either praise him or hang him is not fair. He get's this year and then see where the team is in December.
I agree with your assessment of 2017. I think both 2016 and 2017 were anomalies. We were probably about an 8-8 team both years talent wise. We got very lucky in 2016 and very unlucky in 2017.
And although I think gettleman did a poor job in 2018 and 2019 I didn't disagree with Mara wanting to give him one more year to see how his draft picks and trades worked out. He needs to win more than six games this year though or I think he'll be gone. If you can't win more than 6 games after three years with the draft capital he's had you're doing something wrong.
