The phrase backs against the wall comes from the military most likely WW1. To have the "back against the walls" meant that the unit was stranded or caught in a difficult situation where coming back alive was only a dim possibility. They would, in summary, be making their last stand with a choice of fight or flight. The New York Football Giants have their Backs To The Wall.
Certainly their very futures are on the line and no one has his back to the wall more than Danielle Jones. One can see the first signs of cracking in Jones. The fact is he was never what his draft pick order said he was. Danny is not a savior of an organization. Danny is not what you build around he is a very competent piece of a puzzle. I think when Danny was drafted some folks still thought we had the pieces of good football team, that Danny would simply step into the Eli roll. In fact I was told exactly that-- it's not so much about change it's continuing this Eli mirage/draft,/fantasy.
The Giants needed a more complete change. Herbert was the initial choice of Dave Gettelman. The Giants played so poorly they got too high a draft pick and were forced to go a year early with Danny. Gettelman's inability to draft down has held back the entire franchise.
And this is a very important point: Gettelman's personality seems to make it impossible to make a deal with other GM's, this year more than ever we need a GM that can cut a deal. If the Giants wind up with the 2nd overall pick... they are not going to take another QB they are finally going to trade a pick and really reload with a ton of high value draft picks.
For now the Giants have placed themselves in an awkward position. They have a new head coach and that coach has the attention of the team yet we keep losing. The coach needs to hold the team together even as their backs are against the wall. Home we return to a very winnable game. To not beat the Redskins Sunday would mean a life of desolation from society and loved ones so Danielle Jones has chosen to fight instead.
But will Engram join the fight. Last week against the Cowboys Engram seemed to have his speed back he was used in end around situations and looked fast on the field. Why can he not run a normal pattern? Why can he not be a WR? The time of using Evan as a TE are over. Through the first five games of the season, Engram has caught just 18 of 32 targets. Does that mean he has dropped 14 passes? I don't think so that means a lot of bad throws were chucked his way. So we must ask are they using Engram the correct way? How do we translate that speed we saw on the field to our advantage.. well for one don't run only curl routs which cause Evan to stop and come back to the ball. His speed is then voided.
Engram said Monday that the biggest difference in this scheme is the amount of curls he’s being asked to run, rather than just operating in the seam.
“We work a lot of different things,” Engram said. “Trying to get the ball going and try to get the passing game going. [I’m pretty much just kind of doing what I”m asked to do in the offense.”
That does NOT sound good. But if we did dig a bit into the stats what can we figure out? - Daniel Jones’ passer rating is just 30.6 when targeting Engram.<-- This is unusually low and a HUGE hint. However we are attempting to get Engram the ball it's not working... are these last gasp safety valve type throws... or are they always throws into tight windows on curl routs? Engram must be unleashed in a manner that works for the Giants. He must be made into a wide receiver.
“Definitely disappointed,” Engram said. “Definitely pissed off. We fought our butts off yesterday and didn’t come up on the winning end. Yeah, we’re pissed off and hungry.”
Give Evan credit he's not quitting, despite the rumors that he is on the trade block. Evan knows his back is against the wall in more ways than one.
"You can win while you build a roster," Gettleman said after the franchise traded star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Pro Bowl defensive end Olivier Vernon to the Cleveland Browns in separate deals, . "We do have a plan, and this is part of it."
Well with ODB accounting for more TD's than the entire Giant receiving corps one must ask How's That Plan Going Bub!
Ironically, the Cleveland Browns had a plan and nearly executed it perfectly. They didn't try to rebuild on the fly for the zillionth time. Instead, previous general manager Sashi Brown tore down the team to the studs and accumulated as much draft and financial capital as possible. Then John Dorsey took over and utilized those assets to find a franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield and other elite young talent, and he traded for veterans in their primes to make a playoff push this coming season.
Ok so where did Dave G go wrong. He kind of tore down to the studs but he kept bringing in questionable talent like Goldan Tate. And he drafted poorly along the way.
Fact- Andrew Thomas was really bad at pass blocking
If you watched, you saw how poorly Thomas fared in pass protection. He gave up one sack and, while it was the only time he got Daniel Jones hit, it led to a sack/fumble that cost the Giants 7 points. Thomas also surrendered eight — yes, eight — pressures and had a pass-blocking grade of a ridiculously bad 31.1.
Did anyone notice that Danny was running to his right all game! I heard a lot of nasty Danny comments but no one noticed that the was not allowed to move up in the pocket at all. Gates getting blown back combined with a free run from the blind side every time. It is a major problem. THE TIME HAS COME TO MOVE THE GEORGIA TACKLE TO THE RIGHT SIDE. FOR HISOWN GOOD AND THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THE QUARTERBACK. Experiment is over.
-The only tackle in the NFL other than Thomas and Fleming to grade below 53.0 was George Fant of the New York Jets (42.5).
I realize I may have sounded the alarm a bit shrill.,,.. but honestly who was the first NY sports reporter to point out how bad it was sounding with Andrew Thomas... "Thomas Getting Schooled Already" will go down in Blog history as one of the most prescient NYG posts ever. You look at our Draft class and you ask Where Is The Participation Coming From?...Tae Crowder? All of those picks and we have to wait to Mr Irrelevant to get some playing time.
In place of Devante Downs. Crowder got 49 snaps, 74 percent of the time the defense was on the field. That's some serious playing time!
Crowder, though, graded at a poor 28.0. Honestly I didn't think these rankings got as low as 28.
So Now, like the City itself, A Group Of New Yorkers are pushed to the brink. Their jobs are on the line and their backs are against the wall. There is no room for retreat it is a stand and fight situation. a fight for your lives.
As the Germans came alarmingly close to breaking through the British line in Flanders, and the Allies’ new supreme commander, Ferdinand Foch, claimed he was unable to send help. On April 11, as 31 German divisions battered 13 Allied divisions, British GHQ staff officer Brigadier-General John Charteris confided gloomily in his diary:
“It looks as if we should have to fight out this battle alone, and we have no reserves. It will decide the war. God grant the decision is not against us! Everything else fades into insignificance.”
That evening, as the Germans menaced Bailleul, closed on the rail hub at Hazebrouck, and almost split the British First and Second Armies, BEF commander Douglas Haig issued one of the most dramatic communiqués of the war, an order of the day reading in part:
"Many amongst us now are tired. To those I would say that victory will belong to the side which holds out the longest. The French Army is moving rapidly and in great force to our support. There is no other course open to us but to fight it out. Every position must be held to the last man: there must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight on to the end. The safety of our homes and the freedom of mankind alike depend upon the conduct of each one of us at this critical moment."
As a result of the enormous losses the attack had ground to a stop. Everyone had sought cover in the numerous shell-holes. The whole area was constantly covered in black shell smoke. All at once officers and orderlies ran around the occupied holes and shouted: ‘Divisional orders: The attack must be continued!’ We were all appalled. Individual groups who had been driven out of their holes started to jump forwards. Our captain got out of a hole near us and ordered us to advance. What choice did we have?"
By the time Ludendorff called off Operation Georgette on May 1, 1918, both sides had suffered another round of nauseating losses. On the Allied side, British casualties stood at over 80,000, including killed, wounded, missing, and prisoners, while the French suffered around 30,000 casualties, and the unfortunate Portuguese Expeditionary Corps was devastated by the loss of a third of its total strength. On the other side the Germans had suffered at least 85,000 casualties in all categories—an intolerably high price, drawing down significantly on the roughly million men freed up from the Eastern Front—in return for few strategic gains and no strategic breakthrough.
I don't have to tell you playing the part of the Germans on Sunday will be he Washington Redskins. They march into our stadium and our backs are to the wall. We too shall come out of our holes and we too shall march to victory. Down the field and score. Winning? How do you decide who wins in a situation such as this. More bodies counted, more points scored.
The goal is to RISE UP and MOVE OUT. To take what Washington throws our way and advance in the face of adversity. To protect our leaders and to score points. Keep scoring points. Keep grinding and the respect will come. And the reserves! Soon Over the hill will march a bunch of young men new to the war. They will come through the draft. We will have an enormous number of picks when we trade the first one.. they will come bright eyes and bushy tailed- doughboys- with all the cockiness that a fighting force has that has never felt defeat.
Rest assured Giant fans they will come. Just like Vera Brittain remembers- she was a young British woman serving as a volunteer nurse’s aid in France, and remembered her initial mystification on encountering doughboys for the first time:
"They were swinging rapidly towards Camiers, and though the sight of soldiers marching was now too familiar to arouse curiosity, an unusual quality of bold vigor in their swift stride caused me to stare at them with puzzled interest. They looked larger than ordinary men; their tall, straight figures were in vivid contrast to the undersized armies of pale recruits to which we had grown accustomed … 'Had yet another regiment been conjured out of our depleted dominions?' I wondered ... But I knew the colonial troops so well, and these were different; they were assured where the Australians were aggressive, self-possessed where the New Zealanders were turbulent. Then I heard an excited exclamation from a group of sisters behind me. 'Look! Look! Here are the Americans!' I pressed forward with the others to watch the United States physically entering the war, so god-like, so magnificent, so splendidly unimpaired in comparison with the tired, nerve-racked men of the British Army. So these were our deliverers at last, marching up the road to Camiers in the spring sunshine!"-GO GIANTS!!!!
